Video Transcript for Curt Receiver Hitch Extender Review

Randy: Hey guys. It's Randy here at etrailer.com. Today we're taking a look at Curt hitch extenders. These are designed for use in a two inch by two inch receiver tube opening and they're going to in an 8, a 14, and an 18 inch length. This is going to be a really good way with obstructions on the back of your vehicle whether it's a Jeep like this with a spare tire, a truck with an in-bed camper or even a UTV hitch that's just buried underneath and hard to get to.This is going to get our pinwheel much further back allowing us to clear any obstructions that we might have their accessories. Here is one of the many situations where a hitch extender is going to come in handy.

As you can see we've got a folding style bike rack back here. We just can't get it in far enough before it makes contact with the tire. So by buying that 8, that 14, or that 18 inch extension it's going to give us the room to get our items in place without any interference. Now something that sets this extender apart from some others you can see and extremely durable, solid shank here goes into the backside of your receiver tube. That's going to give you supreme durability. It's going to be very, very rugged, actually quite heavy.

To secure it we're going to slide it in our receiver tube opening. We want to line up the pin hole in the extender with the pin hole in our hitch. Once that's in place use a standard 5/8th diameter pin to slide through there and get it secured with our clip. Now you can also use anti-rattle devices with this but keep in mind, since it is a solid shank we can't put anything inside we we'll have to use an external type. Now the pin's going to be a standard Class 3 style pin, 5/8th of an inch in diameter. So if you don't already have one of those at home be sure to pick it up.

It's not included with the extender. Now overall this going to be a very heavy-duty extender. It feels heavier than just about any of the other ones that we've dealt with. Now this is a two inch by two inch receiver tube opening. That's going to be very compatible with a lot of accessories out here. This would be like what they consider would be like a Class 3 size.

Pin hole here on the side is going to be 5/8th of an inch in diameter and just like a receiver tube opening on a hitch. So any anti-rattle devices and things like that, you won't have any issues getting those in place. Now for ball mount use, I don't know that those are very important. You're going to have a little bit of movement with a ball mount anyway. But putting cargo carriers in here, putting bike racks in here, I would definitely want an anti-rattle there just to keep everything nice and solid. Now here's a pretty good example of what we we're talking about with the movement that we have at our connection between the extender and the hitch. As you can see with this bike rack on here going down the road it'd have quite a bit of play. So we recommend the use of an anti-rattle device here at our connection point so we can limit that and keep everything nice and sturdy. I don't think it's as big of a deal when towing but it's something to keep in mind. Any hitch extender without an anti-rattle device is going to give you that same movement. These extenders also get really good reviews from our customers. It's like Billy said, "I have a Jeep Wrangler with a spare tire on the back. Because of that, I needed this product in order to use a cargo basket so that the basket will clear the spare tire. This product fits the bill and it is very sturdy. Now when using this hitch extender we're going to have the 350 pound tongue weight maximum. That's the most downward force we can put on it. We going to have a 3500 pound gross trailer weight rating so it would be the total weight or our trailer and anything that we load up on it.We also need to check our hitch for it's capacity. Take that down by 50% and use whichever of those numbers are lowest. Also to help ensure that this is going to look good and last for a very long time, Curt's put their black powder coat finish all around everything, giving it a nice clean look.

I ordered this extender last night and I got it this afternoon. That is the fastest service I've ever seen. The price was compatible with other places I looked at. I am very please with the extender. High quality and works great for what I got it for. Thanks etrailer I would and will recomend your company to others. 218704

Easy to order and delivery was on time. The only complaint is that now I have to go buy a pin to couple it to my hitch. I have a bike trailer that needed to extend a little and it came with a pin. This extension should have come with one as well... or at least a suggestion at checkout, like "Maybe you should buy this pin (Item # C21500)." I would have gladly spent an additional $3 on my original order instead of now having to order another item or drive around looking for one in a store 424728

I purchased this extension to use with my front end Curt Class 3 receiver hitch. This setup was installed for use of my Warn Wench that is installed in a portable receiver cradle that I use on either the front or rear of my truck. I chose this extension because of the solid shank that made it stronger than most other I shopped. As all extensions reduce the hitch weight rating, this one provided the least amount of reduction. I am very happy with my purchase and it works as advertised. 440872

Great product, excellent website, very user friendly (the "how to" videos were especially helpful in making sure the product I was ordering was the right one), highly responsive customer relations department. The hitch extender worked correctly the first time, and fits perfectly with my new Thule bike rack (see photos). I highly recommend eTrailer! 172943

I just wanted to provide you with a heads-up that using an extender like the # C45791 will reduce the capacity of your receiver hitch by 50 percent, as mentioned on the product page.

Had to have the hitch extender to fit my bike rack due to the spare tire mounted on the back of my Hummer H3. It really is a nice piece to have since there was no way I could fit my bike rack unless I removed that tire. The only issue I had with it was that I don't think it fit in my trailer hitch perfectly flush. Took a from from KC to Colorado and my bikes started swaying about half way through the trip. Had to stop at a hardware store and get a wrench to tighten the bolt that had come loose to stop the swaying. I now have to do that just about every time I use the hitch extender/bike rack or else it won't feel tight back there. Overall, I like the piece because I have to have it, but I was hoping that it would fit a bit more flush. 390391

I was a little surprised how much the package weighed when it got here until I opened it. It is a lot better than any other one I have seen. The part that goes into the hitch is solid metal and not just a tube like many are. I do not see this as failing at any time. It will probably outlast me. The entire construction is excellent and have seen nothing that is flawed or looks weak. Would recommend this item to anyone that needs an extension. 458502

I have had this for a year now and it is working better than I could have imagined. Using it in the front hitch of a side by side to move trailers around and also to extend the hitch when having an attachment mounted on the side by side.

I'm happy with this extender. It is solid, heavy, and well made. My bike rack now fits perfectly behind my 2015 Jeep Wrangler's rear spare tire. As you can see in the photo, I am even able to open the back door about 6 inches if needed. One caveat: When driving, expect the bike rack & bikes to sway left and right about double or triple what you're used to. I didn't feel the bikes were going to fall off or anything, but it is a little more than I'd like to see, so I only rated the product a 4 out of 5. (I understand there's a special pin with a spring you can use to reduce the sway, but I'm not sure it is worth the price. Instead, I might just live with it, or try some kind of self-devised support.) 225295

Thanks for letting me know the package was here. The Curt hitch extender Code #45791 is good heavy quality. But it will not with my 16 foot trailers. I went to four of e-trailer stores first. Not one of the stores had A extender that I could look at. That is why I place the order with you. The male end was not hollow so I could not use the ant-rabble insert. The 8 inch is actual too long needs to be shorter. I look to see if I could drill some new hole. But with the way it is made and where the current hole are. I am not able to do that. Still have my problem to try and fix. Regards David M 233140

  • Best Bike Rack for E-Bikes on a Motorhome
  • The best two bike racks we have for electric bikes on the back of a motorhome is the Swagman E-Spec 2-Electric Bike Platform Rack part # S64689 and the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE2 2-Electric Bike Platform Rack part # HR1450Z-E. I personally like the Sport Rider more because it is lighter by 9 lbs and can hold a 10 lb heavier bike. Weight distribution hitch systems such as # C17501 should not be used with any type of hitch extender or adapter. • When looking at the weight capacities on ball mounts that feature a longer shank, such as the Curt Class I Drawbar # C45024 that you recently purchased, you can comfortably follow its listed weight rating without having to reduce the capacity based on its length beyond the hitch receiver. I definitely understand your concern with this type of design, as the further out from the vehicle you get, the more leverage any tongue weight will be putting on the trailer hitch. This is definitely...

  • Will Thule T2 Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Rack Clear the Spare Tire on a 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
  • I do not recommend using a hitch extender because doing so will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50 percent and it puts extra stress on the hitch. It is not likely that the rack will interfere with the spare tire. It measure 19 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the nearest bike carrier rail. This should be more than enough to clear the spare tire on your 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. To be sure you have the clearance, measure from the center...

  • How to Determine if Spare Tire Will Interfere With Bike Rack on 2010 Jeep Wrangler
  • There is a way for you to determine just how much room you are going to need to install a bike rack on your 2010 Jeep Wrangler so it does not interfere with your spare tire, which I'll explain for you. Just take something with a straight edge like a yardstick and hold it against the back of your Jeep's spare tire and then use a tape measure to find the distance from the center of your hitch pin hole to the straight edge (like in the accompanying photo), and that's the amount of clearance...

  • Effect on Hitch Tongue Weight Capacity from Use of Hitch Extension
  • You are correct that increasing the distance between the hitch receiver and the actual load on it will also increase the leverage applied to the hitch. And this DOES indeed reduce the hitch's rated capacity. Hitch extensions, even fairly short ones like the 8-inch Curt # C45791, will cost you HALF of the hitch's rated tongue weight capacity. The physics of using adapters is more complicated than just the increased distance. Use of an adapter also allows for more motion of the suspended...

  • Can the Blue Ox Hitch Extender Be Used for Towing a Trailer
  • I do have a hitch extender for you that can be used for towing a trailer but the Blue Ox Hitch Extender for Tow Bars part # BX88265 that you referenced is intended for flat-towing only as with most of Blue Ox products for that matter. The 10,000 lb maximum towing capacity that this extender has is in regards to the weight of the towed vehicle in a flat-tow setup, not the weight of a trailer in a bumper pull setup. I do however understand how that can be confusing. If you need to use...

  • Which 8 inch Hitch Extender has Highest Tongue Weight Capacity
  • The three brands you mentioned all do make 8 inch hitch extensions. The Curt is the winner in terms of capacity though as it has a 350 lb tongue weight rating. That part number is # C45791. You should note that the use of these cuts the capacity of the hitch they are installed in by 50 percent.

  • Hitch Extension Recommendation for a Bike Rack on a Jeep Wrangler
  • We have the Curt Hitch Extender part # C45791 which is 8 inches long and would give you enough clearance for the rack to fit with the spare. You should note that when you use a hitch extender like this you end up cutting the capacity of the hitch by 50 percent. Since extenders tend to add movement in the hitch you will most likely also want a locking anti-rattle device part # 63232 to help take out the movement in the hitch as well lock it to the vehicle.

  • Why Does Use of Hitch Adapter/Extender Reduce Hitch Tongue Weight and Trailer Weight Ratings
  • Any type of hitch adapter or extender will have the unavoidable side-effect of causing a loss of about half of your hitch's rated capacity, both its tongue weight (TW) and it's gross towing weight (GTW). Hidden Hitch extender # HE18 and Curt Hitch Extender # C45791 both cause a loss of capacity because they change the geometry of the hitch set-up. The added length of the adapter will allow greater leverage to be applied to the hitch tube by the attached trailer or accessory; this is what...

  • Trailer Hitch Extender for a 2014 Ram 2500 with 2-1/2 Inch Trailer Hitch Receivers
  • We do have hitch extenders that will fit your 2-1/2 inch trailer hitch on your 2014 Ram 2500. I recommend # RP45292. It can be left in the 34 inch long length or cut down to the 24 inch length. At the 34 inch length it is rated for 4,500 pounds gross trailer weight or 6,000 pounds when using weight distribution. At the 24 inch length it is rated for 6,000 pounds gross trailer weight or 8,000 pounds when using weight distribution. Using a reducer sleeve to go down to a 2 inch receiver...

  • Hitch Extender Recommendation for a Jeep Wrangler for Bike Rack to Clear Spare
  • For most Jeep Wrangler applications the Brophy Hitch Extender part # HE06 which provides 7-5/8 inches of additional length to the hitch would work well. I attached a review video that shows it being used in a similar Wrangler as yours. You should note that using a hitch extender will cut the capacity of the hitch by 50 percent. For an 8 inch extender we have the Curt part # C45791. How long of an extender you would need will depend on how much clearance your bike rack would require....

  • Recommended Ball Mount with 8 Inch Rise to Clear Rear Bumper on Vehicle
  • As you mentioned in your question, using an adapter to extend the hitch receiver on your vehicle, such as the Curt # C45791, is going to reduce the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50%. Since your trailer requires the full tongue weight capacity of your vehicle and hitch, your best option is going to be to replace your existing Weigh Safe Ball Mount. I recommend looking at a ball mount with a longer shank like the Curt # C45112. This ball mount features an 8 inch rise...
