Video Transcript for Review of Blue Ox - Tow Bars - BX88264

Today we're taking a look at the Blue Ox Hitch Extender. This hitch extender moves your receiver opening back to provide clearance for rear-mounted accessories. The unit's made from a sturdy steel construction, it's a really nice design. It has a corrosion-resistant black powder coat finish all the way around, so that protects it from the elements, keeps rust and corrosion away from the extender. It does come with a pin and clip, that's a 5/8 inch diameter pin. This is designed to fit into a two-inch by two-inch trailer hitch receiver, and as you can see here it has two pin holes at the back of this area right here, so it actually offers to different extension links. From the center of this pin hole right here to the center of this pin hole is about 12 1/2 inches.

From the center of this pin hole to the center of this pin hole is 14 1/2 inches. Those are your extension measurements. It has a maximum gross towing capacity of 10,000 pounds and a maximum tongue weight capacity of 1,000 pounds. The overall length of the unit, measuring very front to very back, is about 18 1/8 inches long, and from the front of the receiver opening right here to the center of the pin hole measures about 2 1/2 inches. That's from this portion here to the center of that pin hole. Now, please note this hitch extender is designed for using hitch-mounted accessories or for flat towing only. Do not use to tow a trailer, using this extension will also reduce your hitch's tongue weight capacity by 50%, so please keep those items in mind. That's gonna do it for today's look at the Blue Ox Hitch Extender..

Blue Ox Hitch Extender for Tow Bars - 2" Hitches - 12" Extension - BX88264

Average Customer Rating:  4.9 out of 5 stars   (78 Customer Reviews)

Designed for use with tow bars, this hitch extender moves your 2" receiver opening 12" out from your trailer hitch to provide clearance for rear-mounted accessories. Rated at 10,000 lbs. Pin and clip included.

I had to search far and wide to get a hitch extender that is rated as 'beefy' as this one (1000# tongue wgt, 10,000# tow capacity). It allows me to keep the spare tire on the back of the door on my Land Rover so I can still open it while the travel trailer is attached. Many hitches I research did not have this level of capacity and could therefore potentially lead to disaster if you're pulling a heavy trailer. I would recommend this product and purchasing it through e-trailer as it arrived 3 days sooner than the email told me it would which is kind of nice.

Keep in mind, this hitch extender is for hitch mounted accessories or flat towing it is not designed to pull a trailer. It also reduces the capacity of your vehicles hitch by 50 percent. I recommend looking at an extender for trailers, such as # GY89SR. This also reduces capacity of receiver by 50 percent.

Ordering parts is easy and straightforward. I look forward to putting my e-bikes on the back of my Rv and use this extender to make space between my Rv and truck.

The Blue Ox Avail was a perfect tow accessory for us to tow a F-150 or a 2009 Honda Fit behind our 40’ Motor Home. It is easy to connect and disconnect. It is sturdy and functional. Great product for towing a vehicle!

Use this in conjunction with a bicycle rack to carry our bikes between the coach and towed. This is a 10,000 pound extension that I don’t have to worry about when towing my 4,600 pound towed.

I just wanted to give you a heads up that using the # BX88264 Blue Ox Extender or any hitch extender, for that matter will lower the tongue weight capacity of your hitch receiver by 50 percent. Using an extender moves the downward force exerted on the hitch accessory further away from the hitch itself, which exerts additional stress upon the hitch and its attachment points to the vehicle, which can cause the hitch to fail. Which would be bad.

Built tough, to last.

Its one of the best hitch extensions out there. Super heavy duty

Really fast shipping, Really quality equipment. This hitch extender is solid steel up to just behind the second hole on the extension part. It also comes with a pin and key.

Fast service, Helpful and great customer service!!

Good heavy extender that allows you the room to mount a spare tire holder.
Or fuel can racks or other items that you need to haul, and still tow a vehicle.

This extension is specifically recommended for the HydraLift motorcycle lift, when towing with a motorcycle on the lift. The extension is rather short, only 12 inches of extension, which seemed to me to not be enough, but that is what Hydralift recommended I use. I saw many cheaper / less expensive options, but only the Blue Ox was based on a solid slug insert with a sleeve around the solid hitch insert. This thing is super sturdy! All others were constructed of squared tubing inside larger squared tubing. This thing is a solid steel billet inside the outer squared tubing that makes the 2 inch hitch insert. One note, this is heavy! It is not going to bend. I believe the weight rating, some of the others, I would not trust.

Product works as described. I have a ramp system in the bed of my truck I use to carry my Harley in the bed while I tow my camper. Need to be able to drive and maneuver with the tailgate down on my F250. This product allows me to do that. Trailer is a 2017 Forest River Vibe 288rls with a 750lb tongue weight.

I have received the hitch extension and it appears to be well made and heavy duty. I will be towing my travel trailer for a one hour weekend trip this Friday and will use it then.

Di B.

Well, Hubert P., what is your opinion of it after using it? Thanks

It went well. The extension is rated for 10,000 lb and will give me the space I need to have my 4 wheeler in the back of my truck and pull my travel trailer with the tail gate down for the hunting seasons. With the hitch extension you need chain and electrical cord extensions as well.

Hubert P.

During the hunting season I moved my camper several times with your product and have no complaints

The hitch extender is very heavy and we anticipate that it will work great for camping.
The product description for measurements was really good.

We used the hitch extension for towing our boat and it worked real well.

Exactly as expected and described. I'm anxious to load my truck camper, pop in my extension and load up my hitch cargo carrier then hit the road. I tried asking around for suggestions but ended up just doing the math. Although using an extension cuts the tongue weight by 50% I have a 2,000# tongue weight so in using this I can only plan on 1,000# and the maximum weight I can carry on the cargo carrier is 600# so I'm in excellent shape. No more struggling to load/unload all my outdoor cooking gear... Thank you Etrailer!

the trailer im pulling has a short tongue, this extender lets me make sharp turns with out damaging my bumper. its made for straight towing but with my class 5 hitch rated at 1800 lb. minus 50% tongue weight its works great for my needs. add the super fast shipping and this product gets 5 stars.

An excellent product for extending the trailer hitch and being able to pull the trailer and travel with the end gate down and side by side in the truck box.

Its alot heavier than I thought. I have a 12 foot flab bed dually truck and when we bought our camp trailer they sold us a longer hitch but if you have to doba sharpbturn it still hits the steel bed corner. Hopefuly this is makes it long enough! Going on a trip in a few days can't wait

Incredible service...communication with me every step of the way. Product was here in a matter of days. Haven't used yet to tow but it extends my hitch the perfect amount and is heavy duty. No worries that it won't be able to handle my trailer. Cheers.

Have ordered from e trailer before and will continue. This 10K hitch extension is just what I needed. Fast everything on order!

I have an 8 ft. camper on a short bed pickup. I needed the extension to tow my race trailer. It is perfect in every way. Very heavy duty and high quality. It will last a lifetime.

Got my 12 inch Blue OX hitch extension. Heavy duty, time to put it to work!

2” solid bar goes almost the full length of the hollow tube. Well built and looks very strong.

I had to Search, but etrailer was the only one at any price to have this extension....not the length but the strength. I had an issue with the shipping not being evident and etrailer contacted me and made sure I received it when needed. I think they need to update site to include shipping/delivery dates. But excellent service. Not the first order and will not be the last.

Great item! Exactly what I needed to pull the cargo trailer behind the motorhome the extra Clearence was much needed! Thanks!

This rating is more about etrailer than the product, only because I haven't had a chance to use it. I received my order faster than expected and the staff at etrailer were with me throughout the process.

  • Can Blue Ox Hitch Extender BX88264 be Used Towing 4,150 lb Trailer
The Blue Ox hitch extender part # BX88264 has a capacity of 10k total trailer weight, but where it gets interesting is that it cuts the capacity of the hitch it is installed in by 50%. So if your truck is rated for 9,600 lbs that means that with this extender it's now only rated for 4,800 lbs which is pretty close to your dry camper weight rating.

You cannot use a second extension because it would further reduce the hitch tongue weight capacity, which would create an unsafe condition. .

  • Does the Blue Ox Hitch Extender item # BX88264 Reduce My Hitches Capacity?
The Blue Ox Hitch Extender item # BX88264 will reduce your hitches capacity by 50%. Your F-350's 2,500 tongue weight should be high enough that this reduction won't stop you from carrying your dirt bikes because you will still have a 1,250 lbs capacity. I do recommend checking with your carriers manufacturer to make sure the carrier is rated to be used with hitch extenders.

  • Weight Distribution Rated Hitch Extender for Towing Horse Trailer Behind Truck with In-Bed Camper
The Blue Ox # BX88264 hitch extender isn't designed to tow a trailer. It's meant for use with a rolling load like flat towing a vehicle behind a motorhome. Because the extender moves the load out by a foot, using the extender lowers the tongue weight capacity of your hitch by half. Therefore, it wouldn't work for towing your horse trailer, due to the reduced tongue weight capacity. You'd encounter this issue with any other extender of this type. There are two safe methods of using an extension...

  • 12 inch Hitch Extender with 10k Total Trailer Weight Capacity
The hitch extender we offer that best matches your criteria is the Blue Ox part # BX88264. This 12 inch hitch extender has a 10k total trailer capacity and a 1,000 lb tongue weight capacity. You should note that when you use an adapter like this you end up cutting the capacities of the hitch by 50 percent. So you would need to confirm you still have the needed capacity.

  • Can the Factory Trailer Hitch On a Fleetwood Jamboree Be Used for Towing
The factory trailer hitch on most Fleetwood Jamborees is not really suitable for flat-towing as it does not have a sufficient weight capacity. The issue has little to do with the motorhome's engine/transmission but rather the actual strength of the connection point which is the trailer hitch. In order to obtain the needed weight capacity for your Jeep you will need to upgrade. I recommend the Multi-Fit Motorhome Trailer Hitch part # 5350 which is rated for up to 5,000 lbs.
