Recommended Hitch Extender to Clear a Spare Tire When Towing a Trailer

Updated 12/08/2025 | Published 12/05/2025

Question:

I have a vintage 69 Shasta 1400 being towed by a 2023 Bronco Sasquatch. I think with the 35 tires and the spare on the back I need a hitch extender and perhaps a goose neck for the ball. Can you share with me what youd do? I have such great success with you in the past.

Hey Jennifer, welcome back! To clear the spare tire on your 2023 Bronco Sasquatch, I recommend the Gen-Y Hitch Receiver Hitch Extender for 2" Trailer Hitches item # GY89SR. This 14" extender will clear your spare tire and has a 2" receiver on the end of it for a ball mount. We also have the 8" Long item # C45791 that would also work.

You'll want to measure from the hitch pin hole on your Bronco's hitch to the outer most portion of your spare tire to see which one is going to work the best for you. You'll want to go with the shortest option.

Please note that using a hitch extender like item # GY89SR or item # C45791 is going to reduce your hitch's capacity by 50% or 25% with the Curt. It looks like your 69 Shasta 1400 is pretty light at 1,650 lbs so you should be good. All of the hitches we have for your Bronco have a 3,500 lbs capacity, so an extender is going to cut it's ability down to 1,750 lbs if you use the item # GY89SR or 2,625 lbs if you use the item # C45791.

You mentioned gooseneck ball. We don't have a gooseneck for a Bronco. Did you mean ball mount? We have a couple of options that will work depending on what size hitch ball you need. The etrailer Ball Mount item # e67DR for a 2" ball or item # e27DR for a 2-5/16" hitch ball.

I recommend picking up a couple of our etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock for 2" Hitches item # e98880. These locks will replace a standard hitch pin and secure your ball mount and extender to your Bronco's 2" hitch. These locks can be keyed alike if you purchase them together and select the Keyed Alike option on the drop down above where it says Add to Cart.

How far back is the hitch pin hole on your Bronco's hitch from the outside edge of the spare tire?

You can add this information and any other questions you have where it says Reply to Jerred H and I'll be happy to answer them.

Man! That's exactly why I come to your experts. Thank you so much for suggesting all the right parts. I went with the 14" extender to give me the best turning ability. Matching hitch pins was a great idea for security and safety. I really appreciated your sharing with me about the reduced capacity with the extender, something I sure would not have known on my own. I have all the parts coming my way for a great tow in the New Year! Thank you so much for your expertise Jerred- Jennifer
