Question:
Hello, I bought the carpod hitch carrier a few years ago - great product - but it would be good to allow the trunk to open without interference. I have a Merc suv GLS450 2020 I estimate a 8inch hitch extender should do it I want it as strong as possible What product should I buy? Thank you, Keith

Hi Keith,
A hitch extender could be used to gain extra clearance, but this places more leverage on the trailer hitch receiver, thus reducing its capacity. The general rule of thumb of that any hitch adapter/extender will reduce the capacity of the hitch by 50%. Curt's site lists that any adapter under 12" would be a 25% reduction and and anything over 12" would be a 50% reduction. Personally, I would feel safer assuming you'd have a 50% reduction because the cargo carrier is going to be loaded up and heavier than your typical accessory.
You'll need to look on your trailer hitch for the sticker that lists the capacities to see if that reduction would be too much for you to utilize the carrier how you need to. If it's enough for your needs then you can go with the Curt Hitch Extender for 2" Hitch Receivers - 8" Long # C45791.

Hey Keith, did the 8-inch Curt hitch extender give you the clearance you needed to open the trunk on your GLS450? Your update could make it easier for others trying to balance strength and clearance with their cargo carriers.
