Automatic Slider Makes Cornering Easy

Most often used on trucks with 6-1/2' beds, a slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

Normally, you'd have to get out of your truck and pull a lever to release the slider before every turn, but what if there was an automatic system? Imagine having 14" of extra clearance while towing your fifth-wheel trailer. Now imagine having this without needing get out of the truck to move your slider. The Demco Hijacker Autoslide makes this fantasy a reality. The Autoslide automatically glides back smoothly when you make a sharp turn so you can maneuver effortlessly around tight corners within campsites and parking lots.

Demco Hijacker Autoslide

The base of the Autoslide has a built-in rack-and-pinion gear system that operates automatically. As your truck turns, the pinion in the base also turns. This activates the rack gear, which causes the rotational force of the truck to be converted into the linear sliding action of the hitch. So, when your truck makes a sharp, slow-speed turn, the gears inside the Autoslide force the hitch head to slide down toward your truck's tailgate in a smooth, controlled motion. This way, any time that your truck turns more than 10 to 15 degrees, the Autoslide will ensure that there is enough clearance for your trailer to complete the turn as well, and it will do so without any jerking or binding.

In order for the rack-and-pinion assembly to function as designed, the pin box must be stabilized on the hitch head. Normally in a fifth-wheel hitch, the king pin moves inside of the hitch head so that the trailer can turn. With the Autoslide, the king pin remains fixed inside of the jaws of the hitch and it is the hitch head itself that turns. This is thanks to the capture brackets on the sides of the head that brace the pin box from both sides to hold it in place on top of the hitch head. This is done to ensure that there is enough resistance within the hitch when your truck turns to properly activate the rack-and-pinion gear mechanism.

Demco Hijacker Autoslide capture bracket

To stabilize your pin box on the hitch head, simply push the capture brackets up against your pin box once the trailer is coupled and tighten the outer bolts and the inner jam nuts. The Autoslide head and brackets will fit standard pin boxes that are between 12" and 14" wide. If you have a Glide Ride, Mor Ryde, Trailair Tri Glide, or 5th Airborne pin box, you must install a special locking plate (sold separately) as well.

When you straighten your rig out again and your trailer moves back in line, the hitch head will rotate back to center and slide back toward the cab into the straight towing position.

Secure Wraparound Jaw with Locking Bar

Demco Hijacker Autoslide wraparound jaw and locking bar

The single-piece, strong wraparound jaw completely surrounds your trailer's king pin for 360 degrees of contact. This wraparound jaw provides a more secure connection than standard 2-piece jaws that close in on the king pin from the sides. The increased jaw-to-king-pin contact on the Autoslide offers tighter tolerances around the king pin, which minimizes both rattle and chucking, for a smooth, quiet ride.

A 3/4" solid steel locking bar spans the area in front of the jaw. This bar provides an added barrier of protection against accidental disconnection so you can have peace of mind that your trailer is secure. The locking bar is attached to the jaw and to the spring-loaded handle. The bar automatically locks when the jaw closes around your king pin.

Double-Pivot, Cushioned Hitch Head

The double pivoting, cushioned head improves your towing experience dramatically by helping to reduce jarring and unwanted noise. Built-in pins allow the hitch head to pivot back and forth and side to side. And hooking up is easy because the hitch head will automatically pivot to the proper angle when it comes into contact with your pin box.

Three polyurethane dampeners help to cushion the movement from the pivoting head and to reduce towing noise. Two of these dampeners are built into the head assembly to cushion the head's side-to-side pivoting. The third dampener cushions the back-and-forth motion and must be installed in the hitch prior to use. Installation of this third dampener is easy - simply press the dampener up into the pre-drilled hole underneath the hitch head.

Easy Installation

The Hijacker Autoslide hitch is designed to attach to universal above-bed base rails (sold separately). The hitch will fit most industry-standard rails, including those from B&W, Curt, Demco, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Husky, Reese, and Valley. The hitch comes pre-assembled for an easy installation. All you have to do is bolt on the side plates and attach the head to the hitch base.

The side plates have 2 functions. They contain the feet that fit into your above-bed rails, and they allow you to raise or lower the hitch head to better match your pin box height. After you choose your desired height setting, simply bolt the side plates to the hitch base with the included hardware. Then attach the base to the rails with the included safety pins.

Clearance Formula for Short Bed Trucks

Use the formula below to ensure there will be enough space between your truck cab and trailer when executing a 90-degree turn.

(A+B) - C = Clearance

A = Distance from the center of fifth-wheel hitch jaw to truck cab

B = Length of Travel (14")

C = Width of trailer divided by 2 (to get half)

For example: If the distance from the center of the hitch to the cab is 36", 36" + 22" = 58". If your fifth-wheel trailer is 102" wide, take half (51"), then plug in: 58" - 51" = 7" of clearance.

Note: At least 4 inches of clearance is recommended to safely execute a 90-degree turn.

Video Transcript for Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Review

Today we're going to look at the Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch, part number DM8550034. We have an autoslide in a typical application. It's sitting on a typical set of rails. This autoslide will work with the major brands of of fifth wheel rails that are out there. This will couple up to your fifth wheel trailer just like any other hitch out there, with a couple exceptions. With the fifth wheel clamped into place, that will enable the autoslide to do it's job. It's designed to work with standard pin boxes twelve inches to fourteen inches wide.

Then for certain applications there's addition locking plates that are sold separately for other pin boxes, such as the Glide Ride, MOR/ryde, Trailair Tri-Glide, and the 5th Airborne. This does have a gross towing weight limit of 18,000 pounds, and a vertical load limit of 4,500 pounds. The total amount of travel going from front to back is going to be fourteen inches. Let's go ahead and hook it up to a trailer, and try it out and see how it works. If we take a close at the jaws, you notice it actually wraps completetely around the king pin. This provides a firm grip on it, and keeps it from moving around, and it actually keeps everything a little more quiet. We'll go ahead and operate the handle, and you can see the jaws open up.

To do that we'll go ahead and pull open this pin right here. We have our Hijacker fresh out of the box, so this is what it will look like when you put it all together. It's initial use we'll go ahead and pull up on the pin, this is a locking pin. Pull on the handle, and you can see how it opens up, and release it and it stays open. It will not close until you put your fifth wheel kingpin into it, and it will automatically snap into place.

The kingpin will come in, it'll push open just a little bit, and then it'll snap back into place. Once your coupled up to your trailer you're going to reinstall your safety pin. It may help if you pull the handle out just a little bit to help line it up. Our clamps are pretty easy to use. Once you have your fifth wheel engaged and locked into place, slide these clamps in until it touches. Then you have these set screws that locks it into place, having your trailer be fully connected up to your truck. Next we'll go ahead and show you the range-of-motion that's provided with this hitch.

First off, we've got left to right, and also front to rear. It looks like there not a lot of movement there, but actually there is. On each side left and right there is a dampener that makes this whole assembly as quiet as possible while going around turns, or uneven terrain. Same thing for your front and rear, there's a damper up front that helps keep it from bottoming out and making any more noise than it has to. Let's go ahead and take a closer look at what makes the autoslide tick. First off, inside here we have this set of gears right here at this pivot point. At this pivot point right here you can a small wheel here, this actually rides on this surface. What happens is when you go in straight line it's going to sit just like it is as you see it right now. Once you go around a turn, and you go far enough, this little wheel will go the opposite way of your turning, and this will allow the whole assembly to come towards the back. As you make your turn it will push the trailer away from the cab of your truck, so you don't have to worry about the cab and trailer interacting with each other. It looks like a lot going on here, but it's actually easier than you think to put together, considering there's five pieces you need to put on at the most. First part is this outrigger right here. You've got the two threaded rods that go onto this plate right here. A couple of nuts to lock it in place, pretty simple stuff. Our next part will be the side brackets right here, which get bolted to the side of the Hijacker. It takes only four bolts that hold it in place. To put it together it only requires a 3/4" wrench and socket. This provides three levels of heighth to match up to your trailer. In this case here, if you notice we have this edge flush to the top here, we have it in it's highest position. You can see how the bracket will interact with the fifth wheel rails that we're previously installed on the truck. It uses plain conventional pins and clips to help hold it is place, and it does come with these pins and clips as well. The main part will be the head assembly right here. Basically, there's a pin that goes throughout the bottom here, that uses a clip on this side, and you may need extra hands to help install that into place. Really no tools required for that part. The last part will be this handle that gets bolted on right here. All that requires is a 9/16th socket and wrench. That will finish it for the Demco Hijacker Autoslide Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch, part number DM8550034.

Makes life easy to tow in shortbed truck. Set and forget! Only downside is this thing is big and takes at least two people to install and remove if you need the bedspace! 463418

Unit is heavy and well built. Install was easy, just bolt on side plates on, drop the base on the adapter plate and pin it, put head assembly on and pin that, that's all there is to it. Looking forward to many years of towing with this unit. 377393

The hitch works as expected. It is very heavy duty and has held up well. I have pulled a 13,000 pound trailer in excess of 10,000 miles with no problems. I purchased this one because it does not require any adapters for the pin box/capture plate. This means I can pull any standard 5th wheel. The other brands that I found all required a special plate and was specific to the trailer (Not one size fits all). The only downside is that the hitch is very heavy. But that is to be expected for a very heavy duty hitch. 610491

The hitch is indeed heavy. If you have a chain hoist available, using a lifting bracket like part # DM6100
Demco 5th Wheel Lifting Bracket
$79.35
see link would certainly make installing and removing the hitch much easier.

I've been using the Hijacker 1800 auto slide hitch for my 38' 5er for a year now and I'm very satisfied with it's performance. For the first couple of months of use I had a terrible time getting the jaws to lock when reconnecting to my trailer. Once, I tried for an hour and finally called Demco. somehow we got it to lock but I was really not sure what made it work. It continued to give me problems after that. I finally figured out that after backing onto the trailer pin box I would set the parking brake and try to pin the handle without success because I was leaving some back pressure on the jaws against the king pin. I started making sure there was no back or forward pressure on the jaws before setting the parking break...no problem since as long as I am careful about this issue. On level ground I put the truck in neutral and let it move slightly forward or back, whichever way it wants to go. Works nearly every time. My only problem now is accelerating away from a stop it feels like the trailer slips back in the hitch with a big jerk. I've adjusted the bolt in the front of the hitch frame as the instructions indicate (back off 1/2 turn after the bolt touches) but no dice. I've tried several adjustments and it does't change a thing. Studying the hitch I can't see where the slack is. Otherwise, for turns and overall functioning it works perfectly...Thanks DEMCO. 481306

My wife and I are full-time RVers, and have used this slider hitch from the get-go while traveling around seeing the country over the past year. We are happy with our purchase, which has proven to be both easy to hook up, adjust, and functions well, as advertised. The only matter I think you may want to address are the thick plastic removable maintenance access covers which tend to bow, and the areas around the attachment holes have melted, in the hot weather. Perhaps instead using a light metal for the covers would be better solution. We are very happy overall with this hitch, and plan to keep it . Thank you. 593790

I would not buy this hitch again because -- 1. It takes up to much space in the truck bed 2. It is over built thus weighs to much 3. It is very hard to hook up because the hitch swivels when unhooking, thus making the hooking up very difficult lining up on an angle. 4. With this hitch I cannot lock out the swivel feature. My old hitch I could lock it out I would buy from E Trailer again there sales people are great and delivered time was great. The hitch choice was my mistake not E Trailer's 548218

This demco hitch part DM8550034 is a completely gear driven hitch. Whichever angle you uncouple at is the same position the head will stay in until it is coupled back up. It is a good idea to couple up at as straight of an angle as possible. If there is ever a situation where you have to uncouple at an angle you can physically turn the head back to a straight position by taking the head off the hitch and putting a straight bar through the assembly for some leverage. The head should not be swiveling during coupling unless the main bolt is loose. The bolt that holds the gear assembly together has to be torqued to the specific foot lbs in the installation instructions or the head may swivel and cause issues during coupling. That bolt is part 05366 in the instructions.

This hitch has worked well for me. It is now used in a 2018 GMC Sierra 2500. It is just tall enough that I can see it in my rearview mirror to make it easy to get lined up with the kingpin

I have owned this unit for over a year now. Here are the pro's and cons that I have experienced. Pro- I have pulled with this hitch in some really tight spaces in forward and reverse and still have the rear window in tact. Con- Heavy, really heavy. Pro- heavy duty, smooth riding, and double jaw lock makes a great connection. Con- manufacturer recommends 1/8 of separation between the slides on the top of hitch. When backing upon 40' wheeler in some tight spaces it is hard to align without opening the slides a bit more. This is not he issue. Remembering to tighten them in the rush of leaving is the hard part. Pro- once you are attached to your truck there is nothing more you need to worry about until you disconnect. Con- If you are a weekender like me and use your truck for work the rest of the week, you will need at least one person to help lift in or out pre or post travel. Works pretty well with gantry crane. 604256

This 5th wheel hitch performs exactly as advertised, automatically extending the trailer rearward whenever making a tight turn with the truck. I can back my short bed Ram 2500 into a 90 degree angle between the truck and the trailer without trailer's nose (Grand Design Reflection 337 RLS) coming too close to the cab. This is why I bought this hitch -- I wasn't interested in having to get out of the truck to manually slide the trailer rearward when maneuvering in tight places. The automatic extending feature of the hitch is the greatest thing since canned beer! 616620

I purchased this hitch for my 1997 Ford F250 7.3 to pull a 12K pound (fully loaded) 2006 Rage'N 3005. After having the Demco Highjacker for a year now, I know I made the right decision in choosing this hitch. We use our trailer for off road adventures quite a bit and the hitch enables us to pull our 5'er through some tight and bumpy trails to our sweet spots. We have hit some pretty big bumps and off camber angles and the Highjacker has performed extremely well. Couldn't be happier. 794119

From a ride perspective, this is an excellent hitch for a shortbox. I never worry about hitting my cab and have been all over the country with my 5er. Maintenance is relatively simple and makes traveling easy. Some cons are, of course, the weight and size of this beast. But, it works for me and I like the comfort of knowing I don't ever have to hop out in traffic to slide the hitch to make a turn. Another potential con is the height. In my 16 Nissan Titan XD Pro4x Cummins, I have to have this on the lowest rail setting and it still is quite tall. I know that's mostly my truck's height issue, even stock, but still a drawback for this to me. Also, I had one of the alan bolts come undone in the handle that controls the kingpin claw (so now I keep a closer eye on all the bolts)...but Demco sent me a new one no questions. Even so, all concerns are minor in the grand scheme of things. 789709

The trick is that you also want your trailer to tow level. To find out what height your 5th wheel hitch needs to be you first of all need to measure from the ground to the king pin on your pin box. Then you need to measure from the ground to the bed of your Ram. The Demco 5th Wheel Rail Adapter # DM6099 that you are using adds an additional...

  • Autoslide 5th Wheel Hitch Recommendation for 2019 GMC Sierra 2500 with Factory Pucks
We have exactly what you need! For your 2019 GMC Sierra 2500 I recommend either the 18K Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # DM8550034 or the 21K Hijacker # DM8550035. The only real difference between the two models is their towing capacity. The Hijacker features an automatic slider to provide cab clearance with your short bed Sierra without having to get out of the truck. It also has a premium wraparound single-piece jaw that will provide an excellent connection with the...

The things that the 18K Demco Hijacker # DM8550034 and the 18K SuperGlide have in common are that they both offer 14" of travel, they are both automatic sliding 5th wheel hitches, have 2-point pivoting hitch heads, are compatible with industry standard base rails, and they are both rated to tow up to an 18K trailer. Both 5th wheel hitches come with a 5-year limited warranty as well. Although they both have the single-jaw system to lock the king pin into place, the SuperGlide hugs it...

  • Best 5th Wheel Hitch for a 2019 Chevy Silverado 2500HD LTZ Short Bed Towing a High Country 380TH
The absolute best 5th wheel hitch to use on your 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LTZ while pulling a Keystone Montana High Country 380TH is the Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # DM8550034. The Hijacker is unique in that it has an auto sliding feature that will move the pivot point away from the cab during sharp turns to avoid interference. It also has a wraparound locking jaw which will provide excellent security of the king pin. In order to use the Hijacker with the...

  • Best Auto-Slide 5th Wheel Hitch Needed for 2019 Ford F-250 With Short Bed
An autoslide 5th wheel hitch is going to make your life much, much simpler if you are towing a 5th wheel trailer with a short bed truck like your 2019 Ford F-250 Super Duty. The best autoslide hitch is the Demco Hijacker because of its highly secure jaw system which ensures a complete, secure connection to your trailer's king pin as well as its cushioned head which will give you a smoother and quieter ride while towing. The Hijacker is available in two different towing capacities, 18,000...

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation for 2017 Nissan Titan XD with Factory Gooseneck
Since you have a short bed truck (shorter than 8 feet), you have to use a slider hitch to give you turning clearance otherwise you'll have clearance issues with the cab of your truck and the nose of your trailer. Exceptions to this are if the trailer has a tapered nose designed for this scenario (you'd know if the trailer had this), or if the trailer has a Reese Revolution pin box installed on it. So for your 2017 Nissan Titan XD that has the factory gooseneck hitch what I would recommend...

  • Recommended Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch For Short Bed Truck With Rails Installed
The rails in your 2005 Ford F-250 with 6-3/4 foot bed are standard rails compatible with most hitches. Because you have a short bed, you will need a sliding hitch. There are a few options for you, but I'll give you a recommendation for an auto-slide and a manual sliding hitch. The reason you will need a sliding hitch is because the clearance between your truck and trailer is limited due to the short box, so you want to make sure you have the ability to turn in tight spaces without having...

  • Recommendation on How To Easily Lift Demco Autoslider Into Bed of Truck
This is a great question. We actually addressed this with Demco and we came up with a solution. They started making the Demco 5th Wheel Lifting Bracket # DM6100 which can be used with an engine hoist, or winch, but we have also found a more mobile option in the MaxxTow Hydraulic Pickup Truck Crane for 2" Hitches - 1,000 lbs # MT70238. This allows you to easily load and unload a heavy hitch like the Demco Autoslider # DM8550034 into or out of the bed. The crane arm is not long enough...

We have the perfect solution for you to tow your new 2017 Solitude 384GK with your 2017 Ram 3500 with a 6 foot bed. I looked up your 5th wheel trailer online and found that it has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 16,000 lbs. The Mopar 25K would definitely be able to handle that weight, but you are exactly right. With a 6 foot bed you will need a sliding 5th wheel hitch to avoid damaging your 3500 when making those tight turns. The Demco 5th wheel hitches with the Autosliding...

However, if you have one of the following pin boxes: Glide Ride, Mor Ryde, Trailair Tri Glide, Trailair Flexair, Rota Flex, and 5th Airborne then you will need a locking plate to prevent the kingpin from rotating inside your hitch. Yes, fortunately, you do have a couple of options that will allow you to use your Demco Hijacker 18K Fifth Wheel # DM8550034 on your 2020 Ford F-250 with the OEM Prep Package. Your first option is to use the Demco 5th Wheel Rail Adapter # DM6175, which would drop into the four pucks on your bed and give you the same connection points as standard above bed rails so you can attach your hitch to it. Most pin boxes, like the common Lippert 1621 # LC1191191, have a solid connection to the king pin and can be secured to the Demco Hijacker Autoslide # DM8550034 via the built-in brackets. Since the MOR/ryde pin boxes have a unique connection to the king pin the Locking Plate # DM6025 is needed so that the pin box can remain secure. For a 5th wheel trailer that weighs 16,000 pounds you will definitely want to go with at least an 18K hitch or higher. A 16K hitch could easily be overloaded so a buffer of 2,000 pounds in this case is the much safer option. My top picks for 18K and 20K hitches: If your truck has a 6 to 6-3/4 foot bed I recommend the Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider - Single Jaw - Above Bed - 18,000 lbs Item # DM8550034. They do not recommend putting that weight on the hitch and kingpin/pin box. Your best option is to manually move your hitch to the rear of your truck where the MaxxTow Crane # MT70238 can assist you in lower it safely.
