Video Transcript for Tekonsha Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - 118540 Review

Today we're going to review part number 118-540. This is the Tow Ready T1 vehicle wiring harness with the four-way flat trailer connector. This is a custom fit part. It is designed to fit the Ford Explorer starting in 2011. In a custom fit part, what I always like to recommend is to go to our website, use our fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle, and that'll verify if this will work for your application. This will provide a four-way flat trailer connector at the back of your vehicle to power your trailer's signal lights. Connects very quickly and easily.

There's no cutting or splicing of wires. Basically, you just use this plug-in T connector right here, locate your connection points at the rear of the vehicle and then plug it in, and you're all ready to go. It is constructed of a 16-gauge bonded wire on the four-way. Has a nice integrated dust cover so when you're not plugged into your trailer just put your dust cover over your terminals, and that'll help protect them and keep them from getting damaged. It comes with everything shown here. The wire harness, some cable ties to take up any slack in the harness, and a nice set of detailed instructions that'll tell you and even show you how to connect this. A few specs on this: The maximum amperage is 7.5 amps per circuit.

Basically, when you go to install this, what you'll do is go to the rear of your vehicle. Your tow plug harness that this will plug into is usually underneath the vehicle on the passenger side. The connection point is behind the rear tire, and it will have connectors that'll match this T connector harness. You just unplug it, plug this in, and then run this to the back of the vehicle. Then, when you're not using this four-way, it can be stowed beneath the vehicle or near the trailer hitch. That should do it for the review on part number 118-540, the Tow Ready T1 vehicle wiring harness with the four-way flat trailer connector. .

Recently purchased the wiring harness for my new vehicle. I called customer service and the lady was very helpful in getting the right harness for me. The harness was MUCH easier to install than expected. I had an electrical short on MY end of the trailer connection that I got fixed (had nothing to do with the harness product), and the harness worked perfectly. Very satisfied with the product and support from the company. The video showing the installation process was very helpful. 87795

2013 Ford Explorer

Only had it a few days, but already loving it. Some cold weather and non-ideal working angle(see photos) made for an extended install on my '13 explorer base, but install was smooth as can be. Build quality seems second to none. Only thing left is to hook it up and take it for a spin!! Only 1 thing regarding the matching T wiring harness: more zip ties please Thanks guys and gals at etrailer !! 359642

2011 Ford Explorer

I just bought a new 2011 Ford Explorer, I need to tow a small utility trailer. I was unsure how this harness would be plugged in, but it was so easy a 5 year old could do it. I found the Ford provided trailer harness behind the right rear tire above the muffler, this harness clipped right in, I used the original cap on the other end to cap the male end off. I have only one bad comment, the zip ties provided are not long enough to go around the trailer hitch pipe. So I doubled up or used ones I had. There is plenty of length to get me to the hook up. Make sure you keep it away from the hot pipes. See attached pics. I submitted a couple questions to etrailer.com and they were very responsive. 24303

Great product! Have two existing connectors underneath my 2018 Ford Explorer XLT. Had to disconnect both to determine which one was correct - no big deal. Ran the wiring pretty much straight back to the bumper and over to the hitch. Had to use a couple longer zip ties. 632060

2013 Ford Explorer

I did the trailer hitch alone without raising the Explorer. First I loosened two rear exhaust isolators, blocked up the mufflers with a vertical 2X4s. Then removed the central isolator from the exhaust. Lowering the entire exhaust system onto 2 2X4s laid flat under the exhaust pipe. Next, I removed the isolator brackets. Then threaded the hitch over the tail pipes. I threaded a 10" bolt into the rear hole of the driver side hitch to assist in alignment and support. Installed the special bolt in the rear hole on the passenger side and left the wire hanging. Raised the passenger side of the hitch and threaded the wire through the appropriate hole in the hitch. Inserted and snugged up the supplied bolts in the 2 other holes. Inserted the Driver side forward bolt, removed the temporary guide bolt, & inserted the supplied bolt and snugged up both bolts. Torqued all bolts to specified torque an smiled. Attacked the wiring connector as shown in the instructions, routed & tie wrapped the wiring along the same route as the factory installed wiring, and then along the hitch to the center. The whole process was a piece of cake and took me approximately 40 minutes. No pics..Look at the brochure. It is the same. Great Video you supplied me on-line. Dan 62479

2014 Ford Explorer

Perfect fit. I watched the video for installation and found that my 2014 Ford Explorer didn’t have the same connection pictured. Mine terminated with a cap instead of being connected in series like the video. Once I figured that out with the help of customer service (who was awesome by the way) I pulled it off and hooked it right up. Zero problems. These folks do a great job of knowing their product and providing great service. This is my third hitch install with etrailer.com. 619926

2018 Ford Explorer

As far as the hitch itself it's great, just as advertised and fit perfect. There was a little problem with the hardware. In the instructional video I watched the installation on a 2018 Ford Explorer they used 2 1/2" machine bolts for the rubber grommets for the exhaust pipes. The fastener kit that came with the hitch :76034F had 2 1/2" carriage bolts instead. I made them work but with the locking nuts had to grip the round carriage head with channel lock pliers to tighten them up. If this was corrected I'd give it 5 stars, great hitch 652431

This product made for easy wiring to my vehicle. Basically , Plug and Play. However, recently after 1 year of use the signals , and brake lights work but the running lights do not work. After some research it was a fault in the plug that connects to the trailer. 639167

  • Both the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # C56172 and the Tekonsha T-One Harness # 118540 referenced in your question are confirmed to fit the 2011-2018 Ford Explorer. Both harnesses will install the exact same way, by plugging into a built-in port located beneath the rear of the Explorer, on the passenger's side. They will provide you with a 4-Way connector that connects with and powers a trailer's basic signal lights. The only difference between the two harnesses is simply...

When adding a 4-Way trailer connector, # HM40285, to the Explorer it does require a direct connection to the vehicle battery so it does have a powered converter. • For your 2016 Ford Explorer XLT, I recommend you start with the hitch, wiring, and ball mount. For a hitch, I recommend the Draw-Tite # 76034. For your trailer wiring, I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118540. It sounds like you will be towing heavier trailers, so I also recommend the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7 and brake controller # 90195. Then for a ball mount I recommend the MaxxTow Adjustable 2-Ball...

  • 4-Way Trailer Wiring Harness Recommendation for 2014 Ford Explorer
  • To add a 4-way to your 2014 Ford Explorer what you need is the wiring kit part # 118540 which is a confirmed fit and plugs right into the connector at the rear of your vehicle. I attached an install video for this for you to check out as well.

  • Troubleshooting The Quick Connections On The 2017 Ford Explorer And The Tekonsha Harness # 118272
  • This Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package - 7-Way Trailer Connector # 118272 harness is designed to be used with vehicles that already have a factory tow package. If you don't have that factory tow package, it may not fit. If you don't have the tow package, I recommend you use the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118540. If you do have the factory tow package, it should install to the connection located beneath the vehicle behind...

  • Adding a 7-Way Trailer Connector to a 2016 Ford Explorer without Factory Tow Package
  • The T-connector trailer wiring harness # 118540 will plug into a 2016 Ford Explorer that doesn't have the factory tow package but all of the functions may not work; specifically the 12 volt circuit, trailer brake circuit, and reverse light circuit. To see if these functions work on your Explorer you can use a circuit tester such as # 40376 or a meter if you have one and test the pins on the harness where the T-connector would plug in. If there is no constant 12 volt circuit then you...

  • 7-way Wiring Harness for 2014 Ford Explorer to Allow Use of Powered Wheelchair Lift
  • The 4-pole harnesses for your 2014 Ford Explorer that has the 12-pin OEM connector, such as Tow Ready # 118540 and Curt # C56172, do not carry a 12V power feed for a trailer, only the basic stop/turn/tail lighting functions. However, the 7-way kit # C56306 for vehicles with the factory towing package does include a 12V power feed. This too plugs in behind the passenger side rear tire. Please refer to the linked installation video showing a 2013 Explorer. You might care to add the brackets...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2018 Ford Explorer
  • For your 2018 Ford Explorer, the Draw-Tite # 76028 is not a fit. You will instead want the Draw-Tite # 76034 which is a confirmed fit for your vehicle. I've attached an installation video for you. There is no drilling required, but if you have the hands free lift-gate sensor, the areas away from the center where the receiver tube is will work. The area in the center will be limited due to the hitch shape. To add trailer wiring, I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole...

  • Trailer Wiring Compatibility with 2016 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor
  • We install harnesses on many vehicles like the park ranger you mentioned and we have not seen any differences with the wiring harnesses on these Explorer models. I reached out to my tech contact at Tekonsha and he said that it is possible you are trying to connect the harness # 118540 to the incorrect connector because there are two that are very similar on the interceptors. He said there is a black connector and a gray connector that look very similar. The black connector is the...

  • The Curt Hitch part # C13386 that you referenced has been confirmed as a fit for all models of the 2016 Ford Explorer so I can guarantee that it will fit your XLT model. The installation will be just like on a 2015 like in the install video that I attached. If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. • Recommended Wiring And Brake Controller For 2016 Ford Explorer Without Factory Tow Package
  • For your 2016 Ford Explorer without a tow package, you will first need to get a 4-way wiring connection. To do this, I recommend using the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118540. This wiring harness connects easily to factory wiring at the rear on the passenger's side. Then you will use that 4-way to add the Universal Installation Kit For Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7. This kit will give you the wire, connections, circuit breakers and the 7-Way...
