How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

This is the second one of these we've owned. Works real good, a bit of over kill. The thing could probably lift the whole trailer.

by:

It installed very easy. For a 2500lbs jack, it seems a little light weight. It does lift the trailer but seems kinda wobbly because the post size is so small. Other than that it works as advertised. Thank you for getting it to me so fast.

by:

I just installed my new JET-2500 trailer tongue jack in less than 15 minutes. The light and extend/retract work great. I was not sure if an adjustable drop foot is available for more length but do not think it is needed.

This is second purchase, first being Equalizer hitch system which is also even better with electric jack.

Etrailer exceeds customer expectations by follow up email and definite concern to keep their customers satisfied.

Great Company!

Thank-You

thanks for the photo. i purchase a crossroads z-1 23 foot camper and im going to buy the same jack.

by:

Took only about 5 mins to hook up, husband loves it. No more hand cranking when the old one went out. Great product!!! Camper goes up and down easily by pushing a button!! Priced just right...

by:

Installation of the the Jet-2500 trailer tongue jack went smoothly. Quality looks good and instructions very straightforward. I hooked up the trailer to my Ford F-150 to find out I can't open the tailgate while hooked up to the truck. I removed the three mounting bolts and tried to turn the jack 90 degrees but the bolt holes don't align now. So I put it back where it belongs and will just have to work around not being able to lower my tail gate while the trailer is hooked up.......

I have the same problem have you been able to resolve it? I cant believe they made a unit with such a large head and didnt make it so it could be rotated!

by:

Overall, it is a great product. I really like not having to crank the trailer tongue up and down by hand and it works very well.

One suggestion for Stromberg-Carlson: Turn the motor/gear assembly so it faces away from the front of the trailer, but leave the light to shine on the hitch assembly, etc. The tongue of my trailer is short enough that the hatch on my Traverse cannot be opened when the trailer is hitched. Might apply to a pick up tailgate, too.

Same comments as I made a year ago. Overall, it is a good product.

I have a buddy that recommended an electric jack for my new trailer
He was right, made the hookup so much easier. The price was half of the one from my dealer. And the response for my order was unbelievable, I ordered the jack on Wed evening about 6 o'clock and got it the next day before 4 PM.

Love the jack, hate to think what I would have to do without it. Im getting older and the thought of cranking the front of my trailer up or down makes me cringe. Thanks again Rusty

by:

I spent all of 7 minutes pulling off the old crank lift and bolting this baby onto our Jayco Heritage camping trailer . I already love pressing a button instead of my old beat-up crank. The LED throws off a lot of light - may come in real handy. Looking forward to using it in two weeks when we go camping.

Thanks for the follow up, I love this product more every time I get to use it. Just went camping this weekend and it is really nice to be able to press the button to lift or lower.T hanks again, you guys rock.!!

This jack works fine with my Safari Condo Alto F1743 trailer, which only weighs 2,300 lbs loaded. An electric tongue jack is a wonderful convenience to have. And I really like the built-in bubble level, it’s very handy to have and is all I need to ensure that the trailer is level in both directions.

I have had no problems with it except one odd thing: a few months ago as I was about to prepare to level the trailer at my campsite, I looked at the bubble level and...there was no bubble. I called my spouse over and she couldn’t see it either. The trailer was already fairly level; the bubble should be visible. I jiggled the head of the jack, but could not make it appear.

I assumed that the fluid had leaked out of the level, so I went online and ordered a replacement level from e.trailer.com, $16, Item # 2500-3755E, “Replacement Manual Override Cover with Level ”. No big deal. I was back home in a day or two, parked my trailer in my driveway and forgot about it until the replacement part arrived several days later. I went out to the trailer and went to remove the “override cover” on my jack and...there was the bubble, plain as day. I called my spouse out to see it; we were both so surprised! There did not appear to be anything wrong with it. So I did not replace it.

We still can’t figure out how/why the bubble disappeared and then came back. My spouse noted that the day it disappeared it was a “super hot day” but we can’t recall what the air temp was, and I don’t remember it being particularly hot. The trailer was in full sun, which it normally is at our house, near San Francisco, but we don’t now recall where we were camping in California.

Regardless, I highly recommend this tongue jack if you have a small lightweight trailer. Of course Stromberg makes more powerful units for bigger trailers.

Jack works really well doesn’t have a huge amp draw so the battery doesn’t take a big hit if you have to move it up-and-down installation was easy the light for the hitch is nice but it just doesn’t put out much light at all that could use a little boost from a really good LED bulb I would buy it again if I needed it. This has been an overall great experience dealing with etrailer.com. The quality of this jack seems to be very good. It took me all of 15 minutes to install.(I was replacing another power tongue jack, so that may have sped up the process a bit) Very easy install, the jack was ready to install right out of the box. I installed this on my 10' utility trailer which gets quite a lot of use so the power jack is a life saver. I had purchased another power jack from a local discount tool store(a move I sorely regret) and had I seen this jack on etrailer's site then, I wouldn't have gone there. The price here is a few dollars more, but the quality of this product is far better hands down. I know I'll be much happier with this product than I was with the "deal" I got from the other store. My old jack struggled to lift my trailer from day 1 but this one travels up and down with ease. So far I'm very pleased with this jack.

by:

This product will spoil you--Great and worth the money--It took longer to open the box than it did to install it.

Still working great! I love it. Makes life simple.

by:

This jack has worked perfectly for the past year. It raises and lowers my RPOD effortlessly, especially useful since I have a weight distribution hitch that requires two cycles to hook everything up. I and my back would recommend this without reservations.

by:

I purchased this product for a completely off the wall reason, i try to make or modify differant things to fit the need at the time. this jack was used as a lifting device, for a power chair carrier. This use may be a little unusual but my grandfather was a blacksmith, and he taught me to build things to work as needed not to spend a lot of money to get what everyone else says is best. I shopped around for a power lift, and did not care fot the materials or the designs on most, and did not like the price of the really well built models. Your jack is rated heavy enough and is working fine for this purpose, with minor mounting modifacations, as of this time I am trying to redesign a manual cherry-picker and could possibly use another one of your products on that project. Your web site made it easy to find what I needed and the quality seems to be very good, also thank you for the quick delivery time.

by:

I have not as yet installed the jack.....however the customer service regarding the purchasing and delivery of the jack was outstanding. Communication with etrailer and servicing of the order was the best that I have ever experienced with an on-line company. Delivery was within a few days of my order on-line. I will definitely consider etrailer first when I shop for parts and accessories again.....Pete

My Stromberg Carlson Tongue Jack was destroyed when the trailer became unhitched on the freeway. I contacted Etrailer who had it in stock and shipped the same day that I ordered. Throughout the shipping I was informed of it's progress and they delivered the day they said it would. Etrailer prices are excellent as is their handling.

by:

Great shipping & communication from etrailer. Removed manual jack and installed this one in less than 15 mins. without using any directions. Works great and what a difference it makes!

by:

The customer service from etrailer is amazing. Every order I place they are communicating with me all the way through until delivery. This time my sales rep was CarlaM. She took care of the all the way through with follow up emails to make sure everything went great. Haven't installed the jack yet, but will send a photo when installed.
Thanks etrailer and Carla.

by:

The electric jack was easy to install, and works perfectly. I would
recommend this product to anyone wanting to replace their hand crank jack.

by:

Nice and easy to install.

by:

Now that it is installed and tested, I love this product. It was very easy to install and works as advertised.

The only reason I don't give it an excellent rating is because several screws on the case were obviously (visually) not tight when I opened the box. Not sure if this is an anomaly but their quality control definitely should have caught it.

by:

Fitted to my camper without an problems, see picture.

Thie review also covers the two Jacks bought at the same time, also
shown fitted to the front of my camper.

Nice sturdy construction.
For reference I have a Gulfstream Ameri-Lite 14RBC.

  • How Do I Determine Which Electric Tongue Jack To Choose For My Trailer?
No you're right on track, a tongue jack like the Stromberg Carlson Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack # JET-2500 that you mention is not designed to support the entire weight of your trailer, only a portion of the weight. When it comes to choosing an electric tongue jack for your camper, you're going to want to make sure that you're choosing a jack that can support 10-15% of your total tongue weight. So for instance, you mentioned that your 174K Hideout weighs about 5020 when fully loaded,...

  • Recommended Electric Trailer Jack for Coleman Camper
For your Coleman camper, I recommend the Stromberg Carlson Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack - 18" Lift - 2,500 lbs # JET-2500. This Jack will ground through the mounting plate and has a built in device to show you when your trailer is level. It will draw about 25 amps under load.

  • Electric A-Frame Trailer Jack to Replace a Manual Jack when Installing Weight Distribution
The electric A-Frame trailer jack # JET-2500 is rated for 2,500 pounds. The rear of your vehicle is compressing its own suspension some so really the jack would not be lifting the full weight of the rear of the vehicle so this jack would work. With that said the higher capacity jack you go with the easier it will be for the jack and the longer it will last. I recommend stepping up to the 3,500 pound model, # JET-3755. For better performance and longevity.

  • Recommended Trailer Jack for a Jayco Jay Flight 174BH Travel Trailer
In order to find out a jack for your Jayco, you're going to need to know what your trailer's tongue weight is and pick a jack that can support that weight rating. Since your Jayco has a GVWR of 3,950 lbs (and tongue weight is 10-15% of the GVWR), that puts your range at 395-592 lbs tongue weight roughly.
