Video Transcript for etrailer A-Frame Trailer Coupler - Standard Coupler - CA-5335-B Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at an underslung, A-frame trailer coupler for a two and five sixteenths inch hitch ball. The A-frame coupler is going to let you hook up your trailer to your tow vehicle, and it's going to provide the connection point for your hitch ball. The underslung coupler is going to mount to the bottom of your trailer's frame. This set up is going to be great for trailers with taller frames because the additional frame height will be positioned above the coupler rather than close to the ground. It is a weld-on installation. You can see the unit has steel construction.

It's going to have a real nice black powder coat finish on it to protect it from rust and corrosion and making sure that it looks good and lasts for a long time. It's going to feature a gross weight capacity of 14,000 pounds with a maximum tow weight capacity of 2100 pounds. It's going to feature a thumb latch mechanism that's going to make it very easy to secure the hitch ball inside the socket area of the coupler. To open it, you push the latch down, and then you pull the unit back. It will remain in the open position. This will allow you to connect it to your hitch ball, and then when you're ready to secure the hitch ball you simply just take the thumb latch and push it back down towards the socket area.

Make sure it latches into place, and then you're going to be connected and ready to go. Then you would disconnect from the hitch ball the same way that you opened up the socket in order to connect to the hitch ball. Again, steel construction, strong durable design. Here at the back it's got the built-in jack attachment point that's going to allow for quick and easy mounting of a round utility jack. That jack hole diameter .. I'll take a measurement of that real quick.

It's going to measure two and one quarter of an inch, and it's also going to feature two pre-drilled, pre-threaded mount holes for your round utility jack. We're going to take a look at the overall dimensions. You can see that this is the socket area where the hitch ball would sit into. The overall length of the unit, measuring from the very front to the very back, is going to give us a measurement of thirteen and one quarter of an inch. Taking a look at the overall width, measuring from outer edge to outer edge, is going to give a measurement of ten and five eighths of an inch. Internal, so inside edge to inside edge, that measurement is going to be closer to ten and one eighth of an inch.

Here at this point, inside edge to inside edge, is going to measure three and three quarters of an inch. Now, on the latch mechanism right here it is going to feature a small pin hole. That's designed for a coupler pin or a coupler lock. That pin hole diameter is five sixteenths of an inch. Then the minimum span or usable pin length that you would need to work with this coupler is going to be seven eighths of an inch. That's from this point here to this point here. If you're in need of a coupler pin or a coupler lock, they are sold separately. They can be found right here at etrailer.com. That's going to do it for today's look at the underslung, A-frame trailer coupler for a two and five sixteenth inch hitch ball.

  • Trailer Coupler Lock for 2019 Jayco Jay Flight 28BHBE
  • Looks like you have a standard underslung thumb latch coupler like the part # CA-5335-B. The Master Lock coupler lock part # 377DAT would fit this and work well.

  • 2015 Jayco Jay Flight 27RLS Coupler Lock Recommendation
  • I pulled up a picture of your 2015 Jayco Jay Flight 27rls and the coupler looks to be an underslung coupler like the part # CA-5335-B. Which then for a lock that is specifically designed to fit this type of coupler we have the part # AT89006 from Atwood that will work great. I attached a picture of this lock installed on a coupler for you to check out as well.

  • What is the Difference Between Blue Ox SwayPro Heads BXW4011 and BXW4012
  • The difference between Blue Ox SwayPro heads # BXW4011 and # BXW4012 is the angle at which the trunnions are relative to the head. Head # BXW4012 is designed for underslung, also called bottom-mount, couplers so the bars are not at as a steep of an angle compared to the standard version # BXW4011. It is hard to tell without looking at them next to each other. An underslung coupler would look like # CA-5335-B and would be mounted at the bottom of the tongue rather than at the top like...

  • What Is The Difference Between Weight Distribution And Underslung Weight Distribution Systems?
  • Great Question. Underslung couplers on trailers look like the trailer frame is sitting on top of the coupler. For an example of what one looks like check out the etrailer.com A-Frame Coupler Underslung # CA-5335-B. I attached a picture of one for you to check out as well. I reached out to Blue Ox to get the specific differences and there is only one difference. • Adding Different Bolt-On A-Frame Trailer Coupler to Rusted Trailer in the Woods
  • Well, that is a coupler, though it is in bad shape. It is a bottom mount or underslung coupler like # CA-5335-B. You can check the ball cavity to see if it is in working order but all that corrosion makes me think that using its coupler is not going to work. In order to use a regular coupler you will likely have to cut off that bottom mount coupler so a new coupler will be able to be lowered on the ball. The jack will also have to come out to be able to install a new coupler. As long...

  • Does Flipping a Single Axle Cause a Drastic Change in Tongue Height
  • The tongue height of your trailer is going to increase in relation to the amount of lift gained from the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit part # K71-385-00 for 3" axles or part # K71-384-00 for 2-3/8" axles. The amount of height you gain will be equal to the diameter of the axle plus the height of the leaf spring seat and stack. Basically, the over under kit raises the trailer's frame and since the coupler is attached to the frame, it is going to raise that as well. In...

  • How to Measure the Angle of Trailer A Frame To Determine if a 50 Degree A Frame Coupler will Fit
  • I would use a protractor, see photo, place the protractor on the edge of the inside of one side of the trailer frame and the other inside edge of the trailer frame should be parallel with the 50 degree line on the protractor. Another way to verify the angle is to measure the angle where the frame meets the cross member for the trailer bed itself. This angle should measure 65 degrees on each side, which will give you a 50 degree angle for the coupler. The standard dimension for trailer...

  • Hard to Release Undermount Trailer Coupler from Hitch Ball
  • I don't think you are doing anything wrong apart from jumping on the truck and even that isn't wrong it's just more fun to jump on a trampoline or in puddles. There are several reasons why the coupler could be having a hard time releasing from the ball. First, if there is tension on the ball from the truck/trailer being on uneven ground then that could be the problem. Pulling slightly forward or rearward to release the tension may be all you need to do. You also might be able use...

  • Troubleshooting Movement Between Trailer Coupler and Hitch Ball On Weight Distribution System
  • There will be some play with any ball and coupler because the trailer has to rotate. However, it sounds like you have too much movement because putting another hitch ball in place seemed to fit better. I recommend changing the hitch ball in your weight distribution system if it is no longer the correct size. If the coupler you have is an underslung coupler that may have something to do with the noise as well. We do have weight distribution systems that are specifically designed for...
