Should There Be a Washer on Trailer Spindle Between Spindle Nut and Outer Bearing

i have an older TeeNee Boat trailer 1979 vintage I am replacing the wheels and hubs that I purchased from Etrailer this week. There was no washer between the nut and outer bearing , I have had the trailer for a long time and do not recall having a washer there. is that a problem?

There really should be a flat washer between the outer bearing of your hub and the nut that holds it on. The washer protects the back side of the bearing from the edges and points on the back side of the spindle nut.
The Washer For 1 inch Spindle, # SW1000, is typically used on spindles that have a castle nut, like # 165686, and a cotter pin, # 165649.
A D washer, # 5-23, would be used on a spindle that has a flat side and uses the same castle nut and cotter pin setup.
A Tongue Washer, # 165863, would be used on a spindle with a groove cut through the threads, and would use the same castle nut and cotter pin setup.
A Tang Washer, # 5-101 or # 5-71, could be used with a spindle that has a D shape or a groove, and no cotter pin. The tang on this type of washer is bent up in one or places to prevent the spindle nut from turning and a cotter pin is not needed.

I have a Dexter axle with a tang washer which broke during my last service. There was no D Washer behind it originally. . My question is do I need a d washer after the tang washer? So in this order for inside out. Bearing, D Washer, Tang Washer then Castle Nut? Or is it just Bearing, Tang Washer then Castle Nut? Thanks for confirming.
