Video Transcript for Feature Breakdown: Cotter Pin

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this one eighth of an inch cotter pin. This is going to help to secure your castle nut, so that you don't have to worry about that castle nut coming off. So each arm of this pin is about one sixteenth of an inch, so when you have them combined there, it is gonna be one eighth of an inch. As far as our length goes, our overall measurement, we're looking at right two and a quarter of an inch there. Our usable length from the inside of that bend to the shorter arm, is going to be right at, call it one and three quarters of an inch.

So this is going to be made of a rough steel construction so it should do a really good job for you making sure that castle nut stays in place so that you don't have to worry about that coming off. So if you are needing a replacement one eighth inch thick cotter pin, this is going to do a great job for you. You are just gonna get the one pin with this part number so if you need multiple, obviously just increase your quantity. So that's gonna complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com, thanks for watching..

Great

Lauren was very knowledgeable about what parts I needed to pack my wheel bearings on my rv. All the parts worked perfectly.

We have a 2022 Forest River Forester 2551DSLE. Unfortunately it really doesn't come with a usable spare tire holder or a spare for that matter. It had a 4" steel bolt pointing straight down that would be completely worthless. No way I'd be strong enough to get a 75lb tire up there. After lots of measuring this was my only solution. BAL makes 2 products but neither would fit. I mounted 2 X 1" square aluminum bars for the tire to rest against. The winch itself mounted with 2 5/16 stainless hex bolts with nylon topped nuts to keep them from coming loose. The round bar that winches the tire into place uses a 1/8" cotter pin to hold it in place. The hole for the cotter in the bar was drilled in the wrong place so I had to cut off about 1/4" of the tube to get it to fit. I used an original Ford 16" wheel for an e450. The fitting that holds the wheel is about 7". Make sure it is centered as you winch the tire into place. Once up and properly in place it seems secure. Hopefully this will solve our problem of no spare. I would have given this 5 stars if everything would have lined up out of the box. The winch itself seems to be pretty heavy duty and this is the kind of thing that hopefully won't need to be used that often.

Seems like good quality pin to lock in a spindle nut

by:

Great product, thanks for carrying great products

by:

This was the best cotter pin I ever bought. It was very straight out of the box. It inserted smoothly and was easy to bend but not too easy. After one year it has held its shape and my wheel hasn’t fallen off. I highly recommend this pin and would purchase again.

by:

Etrailer.com staff member told me a product would be a direct fit replacement, the product was not. Instead of making it right I received excuses as to why they couldn’t send me the proper bearing. Disappointed and won’t be purchasing from this website again.

by:

It's a cotter pin. What is there to say.

by:

I am amazed by the detail of the item description on this. There is an actual video of trailer describing the cotter pin, guy even breaks out a ruler to show size. For sure sold me enough to buy two of them, instead of digging through my coffee cans of assorted bolts, screws, to find possibly what I may already have.

  • Should There Be a Washer on Trailer Spindle Between Spindle Nut and Outer Bearing
There really should be a flat washer between the outer bearing of your hub and the nut that holds it on. The washer protects the back side of the bearing from the edges and points on the back side of the spindle nut. The Washer For 1 inch Spindle, # SW1000, is typically used on spindles that have a castle nut, like # 165686, and a cotter pin, # 165649. A D washer, # 5-23, would be used on a spindle that has a flat side and uses the same castle nut and cotter pin setup. A Tongue Washer,...

JC, the CE Smith Trailer Axle Beam with Standard Spindles # CE33201GA definitely should've came with spindle nuts so I'd reach out to our customer service team about that. • How to Find the Correct Idler Hub Replacement for Boat Trailer
In order to find the correct wheel bearings, you can take apart your hub assembly and look at the bearings themselves; wipe away the grease and you should be able to see the part number stamped directly on them. If you are unable to find them, you would need to use a digital caliper such as # PTW80157 and measure your spindle to the thousandths of an inch where the bearings ride. You can use the photo I've attached to see exactly where you need to measure. I've also added a link to a help...

  • Dimensions Of Cotter Pin 165649 For EZ-Lube Axle
Hello Andrew. I had a cotter pin for an ez-lube spindle part # 165649 laying here on my desk so I grabbed a micrometer to measure. With both halves of the pin pressed together is measures 0.11". Each half of the pin is like 0.05". I edited a picture to help illustrate. When you grease the spindle you are forcing grease around the pin. What you can do is remove the pin and back the castle nut off to cover the hole, or you can even plug it by hand when you add grease. I have heard of people...

  • Is A Spindle Washer Needed To Go Between The Outer Bearing And Castle Nut
Hey Mike, The washer is there to place even pressure on the bearing so that it doesn't bind and build heat. Since it butts up to the end of the outer bearing it will help protect it from any burrs on the back of the castle nut and help hold the grease in. I would put a new washer # SW1000 in and see if you can get the hub pressed onto the spindle enough to get the cotter pin # 165649 through the spindle.
