Video Transcript for Feature Breakdown: Cotter Pin

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this one eighth of an inch cotter pin. This is going to help to secure your castle nut, so that you don't have to worry about that castle nut coming off. So each arm of this pin is about one sixteenth of an inch, so when you have them combined there, it is gonna be one eighth of an inch. As far as our length goes, our overall measurement, we're looking at right two and a quarter of an inch there. Our usable length from the inside of that bend to the shorter arm, is going to be right at, call it one and three quarters of an inch.

So this is going to be made of a rough steel construction so it should do a really good job for you making sure that castle nut stays in place so that you don't have to worry about that coming off. So if you are needing a replacement one eighth inch thick cotter pin, this is going to do a great job for you. You are just gonna get the one pin with this part number so if you need multiple, obviously just increase your quantity. So that's gonna complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com, thanks for watching..

I am amazed by the detail of the item description on this. There is an actual video of trailer describing the cotter pin, guy even breaks out a ruler to show size. For sure sold me enough to buy two of them, instead of digging through my coffee cans of assorted bolts, screws, to find possibly what I may already have.

Exactly what it says it is! I try to have a couple spares in my camper (along with bearings and races) in case I have to service the bearings before I can order supplies.

It is a cotter pin. Did what it was supposed to

by:

We have a 2022 Forest River Forester 2551DSLE. Unfortunately it really doesn't come with a usable spare tire holder or a spare for that matter. It had a 4" steel bolt pointing straight down that would be completely worthless. No way I'd be strong enough to get a 75lb tire up there. After lots of measuring this was my only solution. BAL makes 2 products but neither would fit. I mounted 2 X 1" square aluminum bars for the tire to rest against. The winch itself mounted with 2 5/16 stainless hex bolts with nylon topped nuts to keep them from coming loose. The round bar that winches the tire into place uses a 1/8" cotter pin to hold it in place. The hole for the cotter in the bar was drilled in the wrong place so I had to cut off about 1/4" of the tube to get it to fit. I used an original Ford 16" wheel for an e450. The fitting that holds the wheel is about 7". Make sure it is centered as you winch the tire into place. Once up and properly in place it seems secure. Hopefully this will solve our problem of no spare. I would have given this 5 stars if everything would have lined up out of the box. The winch itself seems to be pretty heavy duty and this is the kind of thing that hopefully won't need to be used that often.

I received my brakes and inner grease seals and cotter keys one day earlier that was great,I’ll be installing them tomorrow. I was having trouble finding these double seals, I used some single seals that didn’t work on my boat trailer, they leaked water and threw grease all over my brake shoes, hopefully these double seals corrects the problem.

by:

The right part for the job

by:

The product was great but it never really fit on all the way. I only use it for a yard trailer now. Got tired of sending back and waiting for a different one and gave up on it. My trailer never had any numbers I could use to get the right part. Not your guys fault at all.

by:

Fast shipping! They helped me pick the correct hub for my trailer. Highly recommended!

What a fiasco. My order showed 2 shipping labels. It arrived with only 2 packages and 3 of 4 items arrived. I called on Wed and was told UPS had the 3rd package, that I never got tracking info for and it would be delivered that evening between 4 and 7. It didn't arrive so on Thursday I called to follow up. Was told, oh no it is in Nashville and will be delivered tomorrow. No explanation how it was out for delivery the day before now today it is in the warehouse. I wait 2 days and it still hadn't arrived. Again I am asking for explanation. Everyone pretends to be helpful but the different stories make you wonder is in incompetence or just making up stories to keep from doing their job. Anyway I insist the order needs to be located or reshipped. Finally it is going to be reshipped. I asked for free overnight shipping because of all the issues. Was told to hold on she had to check. She came back and said that the item would arrive on Tuesday regular shipping the same as it would if it were overnighted because Monday was a holiday. I said ok. After many follow ups the item did not arrive until Thursday. I think the guy was Cody pretty much called me a liar by stating that he listened to the conversation and I was told that it was being shipped ground. I called him out on it and told him apparently he failed to listen to the whole conversation as it was discussed both ways and she stated it would not arrive any earlier due to the holiday. I wasn't given a choice after asking for overnight. Your customer service is lacking big time. Not once did anyone say I am sorry, what can we do for you. Nothing.

by:

Always best to use a new cotter pin when changing out bearings and seals. At this price, it was a no-brainer!

by:

Arrived in plastic bag inside with seals. Very nice not just loose in the shipping envelope.

  • How to Find the Correct Idler Hub Replacement for Boat Trailer
In order to find the correct wheel bearings, you can take apart your hub assembly and look at the bearings themselves; wipe away the grease and you should be able to see the part number stamped directly on them. If you are unable to find them, you would need to use a digital caliper such as # PTW80157 and measure your spindle to the thousandths of an inch where the bearings ride. You can use the photo I've attached to see exactly where you need to measure. I've also added a link to a help...

  • Should There Be a Washer on Trailer Spindle Between Spindle Nut and Outer Bearing
There really should be a flat washer between the outer bearing of your hub and the nut that holds it on. The washer protects the back side of the bearing from the edges and points on the back side of the spindle nut. The Washer For 1 inch Spindle, # SW1000, is typically used on spindles that have a castle nut, like # 165686, and a cotter pin, # 165649. A D washer, # 5-23, would be used on a spindle that has a flat side and uses the same castle nut and cotter pin setup. A Tongue Washer,...

  • Identifying Bearings, Grease Seal, and Spindle on Trailer
The hole in the end of your spindle is pretty standard. An EZ lube spindle would have the zerk fitting on the end, along with a hole on the spindle for the grease to come out and fill the hub like you can see on the # TRU74FR. There is nothing for a grease gun that would thread into that, and if it did the grease wouldn't have anywhere to go. Unfortunately, most trailer manufacturers don't make bearing and seal information readily available. It would be nice if everything you needed was...
