Why cant you connect the turn signal and running lights to the front lights and one wire to the brake lights in back?

Sounds like you are trying to use a diode kit like the Roadmaster Diode kit part # RM-154 to install tow bar wiring on a vehicle with separate function taillights.
Running the wiring kit to the front turn signal of the tow vehicle wouldn't work because it would only cause the front blinkers to illuminate. This would be pointless since it's the back lights you want to illuminate. The diodes of this kit prevent backfeeding, so the front lights would illuminate but not the back.
To see how to properly install this kit check out the FAQ article and install video I attached.
