Question:

I know I have a 8 lug axel using 2x12 shoes. The 6k and 7k versions look alike. There is no plate or identification on the axel. The seal is 2.250 on the inside and 3.378 on the outside. Can you help be determine the type axel I have. It looks like a Dexter style.

The Dexter 6K and 7K axles are very similar to each other, so it can be difficult to determine their capacity just by looks. Dexter axles typically have a specs plate near the center of the axle, but there is a chance that it could have come off. The next place I would look for an indication of the axle capacity is the identification plate on the tongue of the trailer. There should be a plate that lists the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR). That should tell us the weight capacity of the axle. Dexter also stamps their hubs with a part number like 8-201, which would tell us which hub you have.

If you still cannot determine the weight capacity of the axle, then I would recommend going with a set of 7,000 lb brake assemblies like the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust 12 Inch x 2 Inch Electric Brake Assemblies, # 23-465 (Right Hand) and # 23-464 (Left Hand). The 7,000 lb brake assemblies are compatible with 6,000 lb axles because they use the same mounting bolt pattern and they are the same size overall. The main difference is the 7,000 lb brake assemblies have a stronger magnet and a more durable brake shoe than the 6,000 lb brakes. Also, Nev-R-Adjust brakes will not have to be adjusted as the brake pads wear down.
