Replacement Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2014 Toyota Tacoma
Updated 10/07/2026 | Published 10/06/2026 >
Question:
Hello, What should I do now? With the hitch I purchased some 10 years ago along with the tow wiring modules, I no longer have faith in its integrity. Every other year, I scrape off a pretty hefty number of layers of rust. Some almost 1/8 inch thick. After just afew years, I am no longer sure what the safe decision is in the Spring when I trailer my skidoo to WI. The application is a 2012 Toyota Highlander 4cyl I bought used in 2014. I have 2 pictures I can send you. I just started again this week to remove the chips of rust. Please advise,

Hey Dirk, it sounds like it's time for a new hitch for your 2012 Toyota Highlander like the etrailer part # e98850 which is a confirmed fit and has a more durable finish than what was being sold 10 years ago. It sounds like you are up North where theres a lot of salt on the road which I am sure didn't help with the rust. How is the trailer wiring holding up?

Thanks for reaching out. The modules are greatest invention. Just plugged in, works flawlessly. Salt is not that bad if you stay off of the state roads but, I live in the Chicagoland space. Can't really get away from it. Sounds like you have a good hold on the deterioration the hitch has experienced. Do you require the pictures? Dirk H.
