Can I Use The Redarc Tow-Pro Link On A 2017 Volvo XC90 Without The Factory Tow Package?

Updated 09/23/2026 | Published 09/22/2026

Question:

I have a 2017 volvo xc90 without factory wiring, can this be used? I am currently working on connecting a 4 way harness then adding the 4way to the 7way adapter.

Hey Anthony, thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately, no, the Redarc Tow-Pro Link Bluetooth Brake Controller # RED57AR will not work with that setup. The Tow-Pro Link uses a USCAR port that comes with factory tow packages, and the # TS56QR adapter you ordered does not use this connector.

If you need to install a brake controller, we will need to go a different route than the # TS56QR adapter. That is really only for operating taillights on a 7-way trailer and doesn't have any braking functions. Instead, what you'll need is the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7. This comes with a similar 4-flat to 7-way adapter, only this kit includes all the necessary wires for a brake controller. Once you have that installed, you can use an in-cab controller like the Redarc # RED52VR, or a Bluetooth controller, the Curt Echo # C51180.

What kind of trailer are you towing?

I noticed after I purchased the # TS56QR that I ordered the wrong kit. I plan on getting the # ETBC7 kit. Ill be towing a small travel trailer and will need the brake controller. So the refdarc # red52vr can be used the etbc7 kit? Looking at the 7way adapter photos it didn't look like it would plug and play as the wires are connected directly into the 7way and not a clip function as in the controller videos.

@Anthony Yes, the # RED52VR will work with the # ETBC7 kit. The # RED52VR includes a universal pigtail, so it'll connect directly to the wires included in the kit. It won't be a plug-and-play install though. You'll have to do some wiring and splicing. Since you are adding wiring to a vehicle that came with nothing from the factory, some wiring work will be required no matter what controller you add. The Curt Bluetooth controller would be the least involved install, but on the flip side of that, it isn't the most reliable controller. The Redarc will be much more user friendly and reliable in my opinion.
