Recommended Brake Controller and 7 Way Wiring for a 2023 Ram ProMaster 1500 Without Tow Package

Updated 07/20/2026 | Published 07/12/2026

Question:

I need to install a trailer brake controller on my 2023 Ram promaster 1500 without a towing package. I need the 7 way for trailer brakes and I only see 7 ways for OEM trailer packages, not a from the ground up install of a 7 way. Could you recommend a solution to start on the promaster from scratch?

Happy to help Bryan, glad you reached out!

Together, these three components will give you a complete 7 way trailer wiring system with an electric brake controller for your ProMaster.

Curt Powered Tail Light Converter # C56190KIT is the 4 way trailer connection that taps into your vehicle's lights and includes the power wire to connect directly to the battery.

Universal Installation Kit # ETBC7 converts the 4 way into a 7 way connector, it has the wiring for the electric brake circuit, 12V auxiliary power and all of the hardware needed for the installation.

Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller # RED52VR is a proportional brake controller with a small dash mounted control knob for a clean, factory look.

What type of trailer are you planning to tow?

We have a 14 foot 7500# dual axle trailer (with brakes) -- we plan on only loading it to around 5000 pounds total weight. (thats about 2500 pounds of payload) I bought a curt hitch from curt directly that allows for an equalizing hitch attachment. The options you showed were all "non-equalizing" for the promaster 1500. I did not realize that the part was available on the site, but it was for the 2500 and 3500. This one from curt was the Class 3 Hitch, 2" Receiver, Select Ram ProMaster 1500, Standard Body 2500, 3500 Part #13207. I am installing it today and the attachments to the frame should be exactly the same as the 25 and 3500. We shall see. It attaches to the frame above the leaf springs. I need the brake controller to make sure I dont overdo the Ram Brakes. We wont tow all the time but when we do we want to not overwork the Ram. I also got Sumo's front and rear from you guys and they should be here tomorrow. Thats an easy install. I will keep you posted on the 1500 fit. Hopefully no grinding is required. Thanks for the info on the 7 way -- Ill be ordering that today.

@BryanE Thanks for the update! You've put together a nice towing setup, the Tow-Pro Liberty will do a great job with braking, especially with how you're planning to tow. I'd definitely be interested to hear how the Curt fits your ProMaster 1500. If it bolts up without any modifications. Best of luck with the SumoSprings install as well, if you have any additional questions let us know and we appreciate you choosing etrailer!

@JamesD. So the curt hitch 13207 installs no problem on the 1500 2023. I had to remove one small ground point that did not quite fit in the hole on the hitch. Took 2 minutes. The whole kit was 6 bolts etc. Total install time was about 45 mins including looking for my 3/4 box wrench. I would recommend adding the 1500 to the "it fits" search from Curt. I am doing all the wiring tomorrow.

I had an installer install it. The brake controller works simply with the one knob. Push knob to activate trailer brakes for testing/ adjusting... Turn knob to adjust. Works great with my new crossttek wilderness...
