Question:
Hello, I am looking for a replacement hot water tank for a 2023 Coachmen Cross Trail 20CB. Currently has a Dometic unit Part 94001SP, Model WH-6GA. Currently experiencing flame back from inlet melting the wires. Could not find any blockage. The technician said the fusable link was bad but looked ok to me. I dont have a meter with me. Im thinking easier to replace at this point. We have another trip scheduled in Aug. Your advice is welcome. Thank you

Hey Ed,
Thanks for your question, and I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with your water heater.
While I can certainly recommend replacement options, I think it's worth identifying the root cause of the flame rollout first. Otherwise, there's a chance you could replace the water heater only to have the same issue occur again.
You mentioned the technician suspected the fusible link was bad. That's actually pretty common after a flame rollout event, as the fusible link is designed to fail if it detects excessive heat or a flame flashback to help protect the appliance.
You also mentioned checking for obstructions in the burner tube and exhaust, which is exactly where I'd start since it's one of the most common causes. It may even be worth giving those areas another careful inspection to make sure nothing was missed.
Another important item to check is your propane system pressure. The system should measure between 10" and 13" inches of water column (WC) under load, with 11" WC being the ideal operating pressure. Having the regulator and LP pressure checked with a manometer is a good next step before replacing the water heater.
If you do end up replacing your water heater, the Dometic RV Water Heater - 10,000 Btu - Propane - 6 Gallon Tank - No Door # DMC39RR would be a direct replacement for your current unit. Since your existing door is likely still usable, I'm assuming you wouldn't need a new one, but if you do, we also offer the complete version with a door as # DMC93RR.
Another option to consider is upgrading to a tankless water heater, such as the Furrion RV Tankless Water Heater - 60,000 Btu - No Door # FR93FR. A tankless unit provides continuous hot water instead of being limited by a 6-gallon tank, and it allows you to adjust the water temperature using the included digital thermostat.
Out of curiosity, where are you headed on your trip in August?
