Replacement Water Heater for Atwood G6A-3

Updated 12/22/2025 | Published 10/26/2024

Question:

Greetings! I am currently looking to see what replacement options on an old Atwood water heater for an older Wilderness trailer. The tag is quite worn but looking closely and through the manual I can see that is a G6A-3 Model. Spec No. is 20026 kinda seems like something before it but illegible with a serial number of J292387. I have seen numberous recommendations for a DMC74FR but nothing specifically detailing it will be good for this particular model. Thanks for the help in advance!

Hi Devon; all of the Atwood G6A models are 6 gallon water heaters with some slight variation within the models which is why you see the Dometic # DMC74FR (Gas/Electric) or # DMC39RR (Gas only) recommended as the replacement. The same is true for your G6A-3.

I don't have a lot of information on the G6A-3 but I would choose a replacement based on whether your current model is gas or gas/electric. You also want to check your current cutout. If you have a 16-1/2" wide cutout you want the replacement water heater that includes the door conversion kit. You can choose from the following based on gas or gas/electric and color:

-Dometic RV Water Heater - Gas - Auto Pilot - 120V - 10K Btu - 6 Gallon Tank - White Conversion Kit # DMC93RR

-Dometic RV Water Heater - Gas - Auto Pilot - 120V - 10K Btu - 6 Gallon - Black Conversion Kit # DMC43RR

-Dometic RV Water Heater - Gas/Electric - Auto Pilot - 120V - 10K Btu - 6 Gal - White Conversion Kit # DMC53RR

-Dometic RV Water Heater - Gas/Electric - Auto Pilot - 120V - 10K Btu - 6 Gal - Black Conversion Kit # DMC33RR

Hey Devon, how did things go with the replacement for your Atwood G6A-3 water heater? Did one of the Dometic models with the conversion kit end up fitting your Wilderness trailer? Your update could make it easier for others with older setups to find the right match.
