Question:
Hi there 2026 Subaru Ascent Limited without tow package. I will install the concealed 2 hitch behind the bumper. Is it possible to install a 7 flat pin set up using the existing 4 pin connector which I believe is behind the bumper near the brake lights? And for brake controller, what are options without having to run wire all the way through to the consol? The wireless option I saw? Thanks Evan

Hey Evan! That factory plug on your Ascent is only designed for a 4-way. You will need to start by adding the Curt # C56040 which plugs into that factory connection. From there, you can add the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit for Trailer Brake Controller Installation # ETBC7L.
This kit comes with the adapter and your 12V power wire, not a brake output wire, since it is designed for wireless brake controllers like the Curt Echo # C51180. The Echo plugs in-line at the rear of the vehicle so you will control it via the app, and won't have any wires running into the cab of your Ascent.
What will you be towing?

The Curt Echo Wireless (Bluetooth) Brake Controller has worked very well in my experience. I have a 17’ Casita Travel Trailer/apprx 3300 lbs when I hit the road towing. I had an older IPhone which seemed to glitch with the Curt APP so bought an IPhone 13 ( had an SE.) Works GREAT! I have app set at level 5. Instructions mention if app loses signal it will default to programmed setting at the time signal is lost so NO interruption of braking ability. I DO use a Velcro strap to make sure controller doesn’t wiggle out. Make sure 7 pin connection doesn’t stick waaay out from bumper. I remove and lock up when not driving??

Hey Evan, it works great, it might take a little time to adjust the braking according to your vehicles braking and load. The only regret honestly is I use my phone mapping to avoid accidents, construction, etc, and so it burns the phone battery quickly without constant charge. For that reason I would prefer a remote for the wireless unit which I believe is available for more $$. Happy trails..

I also purchased a tow vehicle without a brake controller. Bought the Curt wireless controller and it has performed well. The app is a little wonky, but as someone else mentioned, it seems to work better with my newer phone. The app disconnects frequently, but the controller maintains its settings and continues to work even when the app disconnects.
