You don’t have to sacrifice looks for utility. The concealed cross tube keeps most of the hitch tucked away behind the bumper, leaving only the small 2" x 2" receiver visible. That means you maintain ground clearance and a tidy look that doesn’t hang low or get in the way when you’re driving rough roads. If anything ever drags, it’ll just be that compact square at the back — not a bulky bar stretching across the width of your vehicle.
When it’s time to haul gear or tow a small trailer, this hitch is ready. With a 4,000-lb gross trailer weight rating and 600-lb tongue weight capacity, it’s built for light to moderate towing. Excellent product- excellent packaging and delivery- very quick! The installation video was beyond excellent and made it super easy to install myself in about 90 minutes.
The hitch is awesome and bolted up perfectly to my 2014 Outback. Took me 3 hours to install it solo. The second video on the product page is very helpful. I watched it about 5 times before starting. I also recommend buying a bag of new push fasteners in advance of starting the installation. The cut out in the bumper cover to clear the hitch ended up being 3 5/8" wide x 5 1/4" deep, and dead center on the center mounting tab hole. That less than 1/4" gap all around. Check the fit over the receiver and the bottom push fasteners before completely re-installing the bumper cover. Awesome product!
The hitch fit perfectly, even on my 2017 Subaru Outback wagon. Installation video was paramount in allowing me to install the device myself. Although there were slight differences between my 2017 wagon and the 2018 model used in the video, the procedure was essentially the same. I did have an unanticipated problem getting the class II hitch removed that came with the car. Apparently, the installer felt that the eight bolts holding the hitch to the frame were not enough, so epoxy was added at the contact point with the frame for extra holding power. Apparently paranoia is everywhere. I had to take it to a mechanic to have the old hitch removed.

It has performed flawlessly. One can hardly ask for anything more.
Hitched arrived fast and was in good condition.
Two issues were encountered. The notch specified for the cover is too big. I undercut mine and tested the fit. i ended up with 3 1/2 x 5 inches and DID NOT curt through the center push pin hole. The push pin fit correctly after install and there was about 3/16 inch clearance around the receiver frame.
The bigger issue involved the internal bumper that sits on the bumper frame. There is no compensation for adding the hitch. The hitch pushes the internal bumper to the rear by the thickness of the hitch mounting surface. Doesn't seem like much but it has a MAJOR impact on seating the cosmetic bumper later.
I ended up fabricating my own frame brace bumper using a shop floor tile. This reduced the chance of a cover crack during in a minor collision. You could leave the factory bumper off and take the risk. The floor tile was half the thickness of the factory internal bumper.
The cosmetic cover should not require big forces to re-seat. If it does something is WRONG. Proper seating only requires medium finger pressure producing audible clicks along the quarter panel. If there is any misalignment it will not seat correctly.

Works excellent and has been trouble free since the install issues were solved
Easy install with video instructions on '17 Outback! I did this myself in about two hours, taking my time. A helper would have been really beneficial at times. As others noted, I opted to not hammer up the bumper clip bracket so I could re-use it. I filed off a corner of the bracket, but may not have needed to. Then I simply cut around the flanges of the hitch (took a few test fits to get it right). Take your time and cut less than you think - you can always cut more, but you can't put it back! I kept the foam pad in (some throw it out), the bumper gets pushed out by the thickness of the receiver plate, and it took a little finagling to get the bumper cover back on, but worth it in the end.

Still very pleased after one year of use!
This is the only place to do business with. Great web site, very fair prices, good Utube videos for do-it-yourselfers, excellent customer service, fast shipping and free over $100., and great follow up customer support if needed. I have purchased multiple trailer related items from them over the years and each time it I'm even more impressed on how well run the company is. And no, I'm not getting paid or given some other incentive to express my review! This is how a top company is run and looks like.
Oct 2024. Arrived within a couple of days and in good shape. Install on 2019 Outback was straightforward. See reviewers notes about the install (especially helpful was Andrew 5/17/20 about the correct cutout layout and the ability to keep the middle tab. Three other valuable tips from reviewer Kenneth on 2/28/2019.) Looking forward to using it.
We had another 2019 Outback with the EcoHitch. That hitch was a bit more stealthy and worked great but the cost was hundreds more and it wasn't available to ship for a few weeks.
The Curt 13410 receiver sits slightly (~1") lower and a bit further out than the EcoHitch X7601. Although not as hidden as the EcoHitch, we are happy with the looks of the Curt.

After a year we remain very pleased with the function and appearance of the hitch. No regrets! Have used it many times with heavy and light loads with zero issues.
The quality of the hitch is first class and delivery time was 2nd to none. Excellent service. I highly recommend etrailer.

Perfect set up for my Thule bike Rack.
Fairly easy install overall. Hardest part was getting the black plastic pins out under the tire wheel well. ( I do have biggest tires that could fit without a lift- I almost gave up and took the wheels off, but finally got to them)
Followed the rule and advice of “you can always cut more off the bumper“ so that went well and thank you to those who gave the advice. The videos from etrailer were very helpful prior to purchasing and install. Thank you.
Plans to use mostly for Kuat bike rack, and the random use of a 6x10 utility trailer for light duty.
High quality product for a great price. Second hitch I've purchased. Customer service, resources, and communication is outstanding from etrailer!
Perfect fit, very good installation video. The torque for the 8 bumper rail nuts is slightly higher than my OEM maintenance manual, however. I torqued to the OEM value.
One year later and while I’ve banged it on some rocks, it’s still held securely and I trust it to hold my bike rack for hundreds of bumpy road miles.
Trailer hitch receiver fit my Subaru perfectly. Very easy install. The thing I was most impressed by was the shipping. Tracking said it was going to take 5 days to ship and I received it two days after ordering. Was blown away how fast I was able to get it and install it. Will use etrailer again for sure.

Works like a charm. I use it exclusively for a bike rack and have had no issues.
Great hitch- super easy to install. I’m not sure why it gets a 10/10 and the other one where you have to cut the heat shield gets a 6/10 in difficulty. The odds that you can install the other one by yourself if you’re not a mechanic are much lower- you need ramps and metal snips. This one only needed me to buy a $15 torque wrench from Harbor Freight. The whole thing took about an hour, super quick and easy. I think the model year affects the space available for the foam- my 2018 had no problems going back on with the original foam. My only note would be if you’re going to do this, buy a bunch of new bumper clips for the car ahead of the work- mine all broke or were wrecked from 9 years of dust and off-roading. Easier to just replace them. Clips were like $30 for 100+ on Amazon- I couldn’t find them locally for some reason. Oh- the cut out on the bumper for me was 4” wide by 5” deep and almost cut through one of the holes. A multi-tool did the work in about 60 seconds.

Bought and installed myself with the helpful installation video. It did take me twice as long to install it then what was stated in the instructions but it was my first time pulling off the back end of my Subaru outback so that wasn’t a surprise. Plus had to go get deeper sockets for the torque wrench but all in all it was a success. Really like the look of the hidden hitch.

Still good.. I did an awesome job installing it myself.
Solid, generally good ease of installation, however the time estimate in my case...figuring out trim connectors etc. can slow you down! But still, expected it to be an afternoon job. Was tempted to just let my shop do the work, but after looking over the helpful instructions, I decided to have a go, with no regrets. Wiring harness was even easier. With a few tools and a bit of ambition, went pretty smoothly.

Hitch has been performing perfectly.
I chose this hitch due to it being fairly unnoticeable and allowing little to hang down to reduce potential ground clearance. (I live in Western NC on a mountain dirt road and we do get deep snow occasionally). If anything is going to drag, it will only be the small square vs some other styles that hang down much of the full width between the wheels.
Straightforward installation with great instructions. If there was a difficulty, it was trying to be careful removing and installing the bumper cover. I asked my wife to help during those steps. I broke one snap point off along the most extreme curvature, but the others surrounding it seem to be doing a good job of disguising it. I can't tell I broke one.
In a year, I've only used it once for pulling a trailer for over 300 miles. I did stop at the nearest Harbor Freight along the way to buy an anti-rattle device. I'd used the same drawbar, hitch pin, and trailer on my truck in the past and wasn't bothered by any noise, but perhaps the dynamics of the connection to my Outback created an acoustic concert hall for rattling noise. The device took care of the noise. I have complete confidence this hitch will last as long or longer than the vehicle.
Included pics of installed hitch and drawbar, pin and anti-rattle device. Would have included pic of trailer, but maybe there's a limit. It was a 5x10' open trailer with wood floor and expanded metal gate/ramp.

A year later, its still as solid as it was new. The only negative would be that over that time, where the bumper had to be cut, the bumper sags down as it is unsupported and Im guessing wind flow pushes down on it.
2017 Subaru Outback Touring, our factory hitch was rusted out. This Curt receiver is solidly built with a nice finish and fits just right.

Props to eTrailer for the installation video showing how to install this on a 2012 Outback wagon. It was spot-on and watching it let me know that this project was well within my skill set. I'd say that video was probably 80% of the reason I bought this particular hitch from this website. I installed mine on our 2012 Outback: the whole project took a couple of hours start-to-finish, and I had no major problems along the way (again, thanks to the installation video). The hitch is great, works great, and essentially disappears beneath the bumper. I'm very happy with my purchase and my experience, and I'll recommend eTrailer to just about anyone who's looking to do a similar installation.

It has worked out great, and exceeded my expectations. My Kuat bike rack is on most all the time, and I use it 2-3 times per week.
