Jeep Base Plate Safety Cable Connection Fix Blue Ox Hooks Too Large

Updated 04/02/2026 | Published 03/29/2026

Question:

I installed the Jeep baseplate e98948. The installation took about 2 hours without any complications, and I am very happy with the final look. The only issue I have is the two openings for the safety chains are too small for the BlueOx safety cable hooks to go through. Are D-ring shackles or Quick Links normally used to connect the two together?

Hi Kenneth, nice work on the install, and I’m glad to hear everything went smoothly and you’re happy with the final look.

What you’re running into with the safety cable openings is a common situation when mixing brands. The best solution here is to use safety cable extensions like part # RM-910648-12. These are designed for exactly this issue. You loop them through the base plate connection points and then attach your Blue Ox hooks to the extensions, giving you a proper fit without forcing the hooks or compromising the connection.

This keeps everything secure, prevents binding, and maintains the clean setup you already have.

What kind of trips or trails are you planning to take the Jeep on once you’re all set up?
