Recommended Flat Tow Braking System

Updated 02/26/2026 | Published 02/22/2026

Question:

Hello, I have looked at the Brake units for applying the towed vehicles. I see these units use inertia change to apply the towed vehicles brakes, but Is there a unit that can be placed in the towed and actuated by my Ford f350 trailer brake controller?

Hey Brad, welcome back. There are no flat towed braking systems that can be operated with a standard in cab brake controller like you would use to operate a trailer's brakes.

The least invasive way to install a supplemental braking system in a towed vehicle is to use the Blue Ox Patriot item # BLU37TR. This is a portable system that takes minutes to setup and breakdown. It uses inertia to slow or stop with the same amount of force your F-350 is slowing or stopping with. The delay in response is only a second or two.

Why are you wanting a braking system that can be operated by a trailer brake controller?

thank you for the reply, i will look at the unit you made reference to. Why did I ask about the possibility of using the ford controller, I liked how easy it worked on our 5th wheel, the adjustability as to how much brake would be applied to the trailer. Thanks again, Brad

@BradB You're welcome! That makes complete sense. If it only it were that easy. The Blue Ox Patriot item # BLU37TR does have quite a few adjustable settings. They'll allow you to change the braking force and the sensitivity so you can fine tune it for your comfort.
