Do I Need Phone App On Every Time I Use Redarc Tow Pro Link Brake Controller?
Published 02/02/2026 >
Question:
I see it uses Bluetooth - do I have to use my phone every time I tow? I like being handsfree so I'm not a big fan of that..

Great question, Kevin.
No, you’re not locked into using your phone. The Tow-Pro Link brake controller # RED57AR comes with a physical USB-powered remote that gives you full control over braking force, mode selection, and the manual override button (also called sway control). The smartphone app is optional and gives you extra features like fault history and settings access, but you can tow normally without opening the app at all. I also would prefer not to use the app unless absolutely necessary for looking at faults etc.
This setup gives you the best of both worlds. You still don't have a bulky brake controller under your dash, so your vehicle stays looking OEM, but you still get the full functionality of a high quality brake controller.
What vehicle and trailer do you have, Kevin?
