Recommended Hitch for a 1995 International 3800 Bluebird School Bus

Updated 01/19/2026 | Published 01/18/2026

Question:

Good afternoon - Im looking to upgrade our trailer hitch. We have a 1995 International 3800 Bluebird school bus, the frame span between frame rails is 32, currently we have a universal Curt bolt-on hitch but it is only rated to 5000lbs GVWR. I am looking to upgrade to 8000 - 10,000 GVWR to pull an enclosed car hauler. Could you help me find the right hitch? I cannot filter by width - perhaps you know a part that might fit? I really appreciate your time and help - and all of the great products on your site : Best Regareds,

Hey Adam, welcome back and thanks for the information! To upgrade to a 8,000 lbs - 10,000 lbs hitch on your 1995 International 3800 Bluebird school bus you'll need to go to one of our weld/bolt on options that attaches to the side of your frame rails.

The Draw-Tite Ultra Frame Service Body Trailer Hitch Cross Tube item # 41990 has been used successfully for years on your exact school bus. It attaches to the frame with either 7" drop brackets item # 4907 or 16" brackets item # 4916. You'll want to measure from the side of your frame down to the lowest part of your bumper to see which size bracket you need.

How low does your bumper hang from the bottom of the frame?

Thank you for the quick reply -- this is great information and looks like a very easy solution! I can measure the bumper and select the appropriate bracket.

@AdamG You're welcome! The Draw-Tite item # 41990 has been a pretty popular one that's for sure. Let me know if you have any additional questions.
