Hubs for 1" Straight Spindle With 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern Using 13" Wheels.

Question:

Hi there, I have a small 4’x6’ utility trailer and pulled the idler hubs off of it today. Looks like it has 1” straight spindles, so I’d like to get a replacement set of hubs for them. They had 4 lug hubs, but it seems like 5 on 4.5 is a more common setup, so that’s what I’m leaning towards I also have a car hauler I’m considering using a couple of wheels off of so I don’t have to buy new wheels for this utility trailer. My hang up is that the utility trailer had 5.30-12 tires on it, and it seems like most of your hubs are for either 10-12” or 13-15” tires. So it seems like trying to use my 13” car hauler wheels on this utility trailer would be more difficult than I imagined if I were to get 5.30-12 tires dedicated for the utility trailer in the future. Let me know what I might have for options with your trailer hub options, thank you for your time and assistance with this effort in advance!

Hey Sam! There are hubs that will work with those wheels. The first thing I would do is confirm the bearings for your spindle. Did you measure the spindle with a digital caliper? The bearings could be # L44643 which have a 1.00" inner diameter (ID) but they may also be # L44649 with a 1.063" ID. There isn't much of a difference so it would be easy to get this wrong without a precise measurement.

If you need L44643 bearings you can use the # AKIHUB-545-2-LF-1K. For L44649 bearings we have the # AKIHUB-545-2-LF-2K. Both are designed to work with 13" wheels and have a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. If you have fenders I would also make sure larger tires will have enough clearance.

Hey Sam, did you get a chance to measure your spindle with a digital caliper to confirm which bearings you have? Once you know if it’s the L44643 or L44649 size, it’ll be easier to match the right hub. Let me know what you find—I can help narrow it down from there.

@RobinH Thanks for the response, I actually ended up just switching out the axle setup for something completely different and scrapped the BT8s. The spindles were hard mounted to an I-beam and I didn’t like how much the trailer bounced, so I added leaf springs and a full axle under the trailer that came with hubs in good shape.
