Question:

I have a carry on trailer with a Dexter 93/80 idler axle with bolt pattern 5 lug on 4.5” and would like to replace the axle. Will e52GR fit without modifications or welding? I realize it is two inches longer and will stick out an inch further on each side but the fenders are wide enough for this.

It definitely will Paul. The spring seats on the Trailer Axle with Idler Hubs item # e52GR are welded on at an 80" spacing. All you'll need to do is bolt this up where your current axle sits.

You will want to replace the U-bolts though. It's not recommended to reuse them when swapping out axles. The item # APUBR-1 kit will provide everything you need.

Hey Paul, how did the swap with the new 3,500‑lb axle and U‑bolt kit go on your Carry‑On trailer? I'm curious if everything bolted up as expected with the 80‑inch spring seat spacing. Your update could make it easier for the next person doing the same replacement.

@Jerred I’m hoping a little bit longer shackles will give the bow in the axle more clearance between the deck and it doesn’t look like I will have the fender clearance with the larger tires. It’s still WIP since I’m waiting to n the shackles.

The old axle/hubs used castle nuts. The new axle/hubs did not come with castle nuts. Should I use the nuts that you sent me? I haven’t yet tried the castle nuts on the new axle yet but intend to.

@HiJ To raise the height of your trailer, you'll want the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit item # K71-385-00. This kit attaches to the spring seats of the Dexter Trailer Axle item # 8327834, you purchased, and moves the axle below the springs. This lift kit only works if your axle is currently mounted above your leaf springs. If your current axle is already setup to be mounted below your leaf springs, you'll need the Correct Track Trailer Alignment and Lift Kit item # LC87120. This kit mounts to your spring hangers and moves the attachment point for your springs down 1-1/4", which raises your trailer up a corresponding amount. If you want a 2-1/4" lift you'll need to use the item # RR23QX. 100% yes. Since you have everything broken down this is the best time to replace/upgrade the leaf springs. To recommend replacements, I'll need to know the distance between the eye holes on the springs, without the trailer's weight on them. If you haven't already removed them, you'll need to lift up one side of your trailer to get an accurate measurement. They like to stretch out over years of use. I'll also need to know how many leafs you're wanting.
