Ball Shank Diameter and Length is the Ball in the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System?

Updated 04/11/2025 | Published 04/08/2025

Question:

What is the diameter of the shank for the ball that fits this. I want to buy a 2 5/16 ball with 15k capacity, but what shank diameter and length should the ball threads be?

Hello Martin,

I have some really great news for you, you will not need a higher rated ball. On the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control - 2" Hitch - Underslung - 10K GTW, 1K TW # BXW1003 the spring bars are rated for 10K, but the hitch ball is actually rated for 20K. I attached the parts breakdown of the instructions and highlighted the ball information. I do not like to see people spending money when it is not necessary.

But to answer your question it is a 1 1/4" diameter, and the length of the ball shank would need to be at least 2-3/4" to pass through the head and washer stack.

What kind of trailer are you going to be towing with the weight distribution system?

I will be towing a travel trailer with 13,000 GVWR and 890 tongue weight. it has a 2 5/16 inch receiver. I will be replacing the bars with BXW4007 which is rated for tongue weight 750-1000 lbs. I need to replace the 2 inch ball on my sway pro with a 2 5/16 inch ball rated for GVWR of 15,000 lbs. can you send me a part number of a ball like that with appropriate shank diameter and length for the sway pro hitch?

@Martin Oh, got it Martin. The only hitch ball I have in a 15K with 1 1/4" diameter is 2 5/8" long, I know it's not much of a difference from the 2 3/4" but I would hate for you to get it and it be a hair too short. So I would bump it up to the 20K and go with the Shocker 2-5/16" Hitch Ball with 1-1/4" Shank- 20K # SHK66ZR. Sounds like you have the rest of the part all figured out to put you right in that sweet spot! Safe travels =)
