Recommended Weight Distribution for Lance 1685 Travel Trailer

Published 07/08/2016

Question:

I have just purchased an RV, and trying to decide on the the best w/d sway system. I have a 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 with tow package and my trailer is a 2017 Lance 1685 5500 pounds max. I did some research, and I really liked the Anderson 3344 system, but my dealer is advising against it in the strongest terms. They carry the Blue Ox and Equalizer systems. I liked the Anderson because it is light, easy on the eyes, prevents bounce, and most of all, is quiet. Im not even required to have a system since my trailer is under 7000 pounds, but I know there will be times that I need one i.e., long trips on the interstate or in windy weather. Can you help this confused newby? Thanks much

Between the three systems you mentioned, I'd recommend the Equal-I-zer because of it's all-around effectiveness providing weight distribution as well as sway control. The system is very easy to set up and use, mechanically speaking it's very simple with few moving parts.

The force exerted by the spring bars will prevent any bounce, and the Equal-I-zer systems are relatively quiet, but all weight distribution systems will have some sort of metal on metal friction and will make noise of some kind.

In order to choose the properly rated system, you'll need to know the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer. The weight of any gear stowed in the truck bed behind the rear truck axle should also be considered tongue weight. I'll link you to some FAQ articles that explain how weight distribution works and how to determine the fully loaded tongue weight of your trailer.

If the tongue weight is below 600 lbs, I'd recommend the Equal-I-zer # EQ37060ET. If it's above 600 lbs, I'd go with # EQ37100ET. A thin walled 1-7/8 inch socket like part # ALL643216 is recommended for installing the included hitch ball.
