Recommended Flat Towing Parts for a 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500

Updated 03/31/2025 | Published 03/25/2025

Question:

I have a 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4 with 5.3 V8. I have a Class A motorhome rated to tow 10,000 pounds and would like to flat tow my truck. I am currently looking at the Blue ox base plate kit BO94FR. the Roadmaster falcon 2 tow bar, the Roadmaster 4 diode wiring kit, and the Patriot brake 2 system. Is this all compatible to make the system work? Do you have any suggestions on changes? I do not want a hard wired braking system as I may not keep this truck. I am trying to stay economical as I am not a full time RVr. Thank you

Hey Steven, thanks for reaching out!

I really like your list, but I do have a few alternative suggestions if you don't mind. Here is what I recommend:

- Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BO94FR
- etrailer Tow Bar # e47ZR (easier to use than the Roadmaster Falcon 2 # RM-525)
- Roadmaster Wiring # RM-15267
- Battery Disconnect # RM-766 (optional)
- Brake Buddy Classic 3 # HM39494 (more reliable than the Patriot # BLU37TR)
- High-Low Adapter (see attached article - bracket height is 18")

The etrailer tow bar has more adjustability and is easier to use than the Falcon 2, and I really like the Classic 3 brake system over the Patriot because it's more reliable, but also you can use the Second Vehicle Kit # BB59SR to make it easier to transfer the system to a different vehicle in the future.

Thank you very much, would I need an in line charge adapter as well or is that not really necessary to keep my vehicle battery charged while towing?

@Steven It would be good to have the Charge Line Kit # RM-156-25 if you use the Patriot braking system. The Classic 3 from Brake Buddy comes with a battery charger so it's one less thing you have to purchase.
