How to Install the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness on a 2022 Toyota Highlander

Hey everybody, Ryan here at Etrailer. Today, on our 2022 Toyota Highlander, we're going to be showing you how to install, the Tekonsha vehicle wiring harness kit, but before we do that, why don't we check this out and make sure it's going to work for you. When it comes to the Toyota Highlander, you know, super capable SUVs and people do a lot of stuff with them, which does include towing and so, if you're pulling a trailer, you're going to want the lights to work on it, and that's exactly what this is going to do, it's going to have that four-way flat, which will plug into those small or medium-sized trailers and power everything up. Not to mention, cargo carriers that have lights on them, are getting more and more popular nowadays, and those will have the same type of connector as well, so this will power those up. But I want to address one of the big questions, it seems like a lot of people are wondering, because there's Highlanders that have "the factory tow package and others that are not equipped, with the factory tow package." And there seems to be a little confusion, when it comes to that. So, just want to explain on how you can figure that out, that way you make sure you get the right wiring, the first time and you'll be squared away.

The majority of these Highlanders that I've had in here, matter of fact, I think all of them, have not had the factory tow package. And one real quick way to find that out, if you're unsure and you want to double-check, is there's a connector inside of your vehicle and it's right here in this area, behind this panel and during the installation, I'll show you, there's a couple bolts you can pop out and you can get to it pretty easy. If that connector back there is not plugged into anything, chances are, pretty much, well, chances are 100%, that you're going to need the wiring kit, for vehicles without the factory tow package, like this one here today. If you look back there and that connector's actually plugged into a module or a box or something like that, then chances are really good, you do have the factory tow package and you can get the other kit that just includes or just has the wiring connector like this here, that plugs right into the bottom. So, you know, like I said, I just wanted to touch base on that, that way, we can try to make sure, you get what you need the first time.

Other than that, though, at the end of the day, you know if you're looking for some wiring, to power up your trailer, you can't go wrong with, you know, if you know Tekonsha makes good stuff, I had a Tekonsha kit in my own personal vehicle for years, never had any issues with it, so, you know, I've got faith in them. As far as it's getting installed, it's really not too bad, you have one connector plug right here, where it's plugs right in, the one that we kind of talked about in the panel, couple bolts you got to pull out and move the panels out a little bit, reach your hand in there and plug it in, but that's really it, so not much to it and just about anyone should be able to do this. But speaking of that, why don't we go ahead and I'll hook it up together now. So you begin our installation, we're going to have two wiring connectors, that we're going to need to hook up. One will be on the inside of our vehicle.

The other one will be on the outside, located right here in this area. So essentially just behind our plastic fascia, right here in this location. Here's that connector plug and there is a cap on it. It's just a dummy plug, that's plugged in, to keep corrosion and stuff out of there, so we'll take that off. Essentially, you just push down on the tab and this will slide off.

So not going to be using this, get rid of it. And then as far as our connector goes, you're just going to take the appropriate connector end, from your new wiring kit, so we just plug that right in. So what I've done now, is just ran our four way flat connector, over to the bracket there on our hitch, and just zip tied everything up, I did take some wire looms, some plastic wire loom, put it over the wiring just to help kind of clean things up and have it blend in, this don't come with the kit but you can always grab it here at Etrailer. And now we can move to inside of our vehicle. And over here on the driver's side, like the area where your cup holders and stuff are, we're going to have to loosen up this panel, to find the factory connector that's located behind here. And so what you're going to do first, the cup holder tray, you can actually just grab that, kind of pull straight up on it, pop it out, and we'll set it off to the side. Pop the cup holder thing out, and there's a pocket and inside of it, there is a 10 millimeter head screw, so we're going to pull that out, you can use an extension and a long socket, cause it is somewhat deep. Let's pull out, see if I can, get it completely out, be careful not to drop this thing, cause good luck finding it. So we got that and we're going to have one more up here, so you see this circle piece, you can just take a pick or screwdriver or something and you're simply just going to pry that out or just on snaps and we're going to have another, 10 millimeter head bolt there as well. Once we have these out, you can kind of come to this edge here, where it meets our door opening and start to kind of pop this out we, hopefully should be able to get our hand back there and get to the connector, it should be somewhere in this area right here. And you're going to take the weather stripping and just grab that, this just kind of peels off, really you need to go from this corner down. And then if we kind of grab our panel there, we'll be able to just kind of carefully start to pop it free and hopefully we can kind of get inside there and locate our connector plug. If you look right here, that is going to be, the connector plug, for our trailer wiring. So you can reach back there, pull it out like this, gives you a little more working room and what I'm going to do now is grab our wiring, since it's so tight in here, I'm just going to plug it in, then we can see what it looks like after that's done. Here's that connector plugged in, really straightforward stuff. The rest of the wiring, I just kind of drop down and towards that opening, from our cup holders that we pulled out, that way we can kind of secure everything. So I'll make sure that's where I want it and then what we can do is get our panel, I'll push back into place and reinstall the opposite way. To secure this, I'm just going to place it down, in this opening far enough down, to where it won't interfere with our cup holders, once those go back in. And to do that, I'm going to use some of the, included two-sided sticky tape. Just make sure the surfaces are clean, so what I did a minute ago was just wipe them down, with a paper towel and some rubbing alcohol, obviously let them dry off, right I'm just going to take this and place it all the way down there and stick it to the sheet metal. This is what the module box is going to look like, once you have it secured. If I had all wrapped up, though, we'll go ahead and pop our cup holder back into place. Now that's all, all that's stuff to do is go round back and test our wiring. To test everything I suggest using a tester like this one, as opposed to just plugging into your trailer, cause if your trailer has issues, you know it could mislead you into thinking, it's a wiring issue on your Toyota side. But with that in mind, we'll try our left turn signal, our right turn signal, our brakes and our running lights. And that'll finish up our look at and our installation, of the Tekonsha vehicle wiring harness kit, on our 2022 Toyota Highlander..
