Installation Process For A Trailer Brake Controller In A 2022 Toyota Highlander

Before you can install a trailer brake controller in your 2022 Toyota Highlander you'll first need to make sure that you have a 4-pole wire harness for your lights installed and then a 7-way wire harness to get your brake function. If you don't already have a 4-pole installed then you'll want the Tekonsha # TK74FR if you have a factory tow package or the Curt # C59236 if you don't. From there you can install a 7-way # ETBC7.

The # ETBC7 will have a 4-pole connector to connect to the 4-pole wire harness for the light functions. You'll also have a white ground wire to run to the frame and a yellow reverse light wire that you can just cap off with electrical tape unless you have a boat trailer with an electronic lockout for the brakes. The black wire will run up to the battery with one of the included circuit breakers spliced inline. The blue wire will run to the cab to connect to your brake controller. I've attached a video of this process that Conner made to walk you through it.

I see that you're looking at the Tuson DirecLink Base Model Trailer Brake Controller # 335DL-100, which to be honest I'm not a huge fan of. It's super easy to install but the handheld remote is a bit dated in my opinion and tends to be in the way when not in use. I've attached a video below where I'll walk you through the installation process step by step.

If you haven't purchased your brake controller yet then I highly recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller # RED24FR instead. This system has a much smaller control knob that can be drilled into the dash or into a blank switch panel (depending on size). We offer a few different options for this: # 331-TPSI-002, # 331-TPSI-001, # 331-TPSI-007. Since there isn't a plug-in option for your vehicle you'll also need to pick up a universal wire harness # RED69FR.
