Replacement Bearing Kit for Dexter Axle 0404 8-219 Hubs

Updated 11/04/2025 | Published 01/23/2025

Question:

Hello I was trying to figure out some info. I live in arizona and my grandfather lives in California. He is giving me an old homemade trailer that he owns and he doesnt seem to know much about it. Anyway I have to go to California and get it up and running within two days of arriving. I wanted to take some parts with me like a bearing kit. I dont have much information on the axle size or anything really. I have a few pictures of the hub and I was wondering if you could help me get the correct bearing and race seal kit. The hub says dexter 0404 8-219

Hey Alen, thanks for reaching out and providing all of the info!

Knowing that your trailer is equipped with Dexter 0404 8-219 Hubs is huge - this tells me that the exact bearing kit you need is part # BK3-200 which comes with the bearings, races, a seal, and cotter pin, so you'll need one bearing kit per hub.

Be sure to take some supplies like paper towels or some cloth towels to completely clean off the spindle and clean out the hub because some greases don't mix well together, and I doubt your grandfather remembers what grease was last used for the trailer. If you don't have a tub of grease, then I highly recommend the LubriMatic Prime Guard # L11380 which comes in a tub big enough for you to easily grease all of the bearings.

You might also consider using a bearing packer tool like part # ALL647646 or # L70025 especially if you're trying to get it up and running quickly. Our team spent an afternoon repacking bearings on a trailer last year as an exercise and it wasn't terrible to do by hand, but there were also a handful of us doing it so it went a lot quicker - packing 2 axles worth of bearings by hand will take quite a while so a tool will speed things up.

It sounds like your main objective is to just get the trailer home at this point in time. Once you get it home feel free to reach back out (in the comment section below) with any other parts you're wanting to swap out/upgrade and I'll be more than happy to help you get the trailer back up and running!

Hey Alen, how did things go getting your grandfather’s trailer ready with the bearing kit and grease you took along? Your update could make it easier for others trying to revive an older homemade trailer.

@JonG I got all the bearing and races changed out and got it home. The only problem I had was that th 10-36 seal did not fit the shaft and was loose. It was apparent that it was not going to hold back any bearing grease. I was forced to use the old seals even though they were kinda beat up and it worked fine to get it home. I'll definitely have to change some parts again but I will likely upgrade the 6000lb axles to 8000lb axles in the future. Thanks

@Alen I'm glad you were able to get the trailer home, but loose seals definitely are not a good thing, and I apologize about that. Were they really loose or just slightly? The ones that came with the kit have a 2.250" ID, but we also have the Grease Seal Kit # RG06-090 which has the same OD, but a smaller 2.125" ID. Would that work do you think?

@JonG it's hard to say because it has been months since I had it apart. I remember it being quite loose but if I had known that it might have been an issue I definitely would have spent the $8.00 to get myself some options to take out there to California. I don't mind keeping extra parts and pieces on hand.
