What Is The Difference Between 7K Hub/Drums From etrailer And Dexter?

Updated 12/25/2025 | Published 12/23/2025

Question:

What is the quality difference between dexter hubs and drums and e-trailer brand hubs and drums? Is the pricing for hubs/drums per drum and not per set of two? Thank you

Hi Phil!

The main difference between the etrailer Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-865-7-2-EZ-K and the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 42866UC3-EZ is where they are made. Ours are made over seas and Dexter hubs are made here in America. The etrailer option is less expensive though.

Other than that, they are both for 5,200 to 7,000 pound axles, use the same # 25580 inner bearing and # 14125A outer bearing, use the same # GS-2250DL seal, have 1/2" studs, are pre-greased, and have caps that accommodate EZ-Lube spindles.

Both are also sold individually, so if you are needing to replace both on an axle, you will need to order a quantity of two.

What are you wanting to install these on? And do you know your stud size? We do have other options available if yours are larger than 1/2".

@PhillipL Oh nice! Sounds like a good thing to add on. ^___^ If you aren't too worried about the parts being American made, you can save quite a bit of money going with our stuff. I have our brakes listed down below in case you wanted to check them out. They correspond to the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brakes - 12" - Left/Right Hand Assemblies - 7K # 23-464-465 you were looking at. etrailer Electric Trailer Brakes - Self-Adjusting - 12" - Left/Right Hand - 5.2K to 7K # AKEBRK-7-SA

Just a comment - I did get these when the OEM dexter drum brakes wore out on my 7K dexter axles. I only replaced the left side and kept the right side spare. These brakes, like any drum brakes I've had on a trailer, work a little better than dragging your feet on the ground (ala Fred Flintstone). The never-adjust feature didn't really matter to me since I don't wear the brakes appreciably enough before it's time to pack the bearings - at which time I have to adjust the brakes anyway. For a wood chipper, they're probably fine. I *had* them on my 40' 5th wheel and thank God I pull with a F450 that can stop my setup even with zero trailer brakes. I say *had* since I went to discs. That's way more expensive, but for my case, totally worth it.
