Best Full Flat Tow System For 2016 Chevy Colorado Z71

Updated 11/04/2025 | Published 01/16/2025

Question:

Im looking to install a full flat-tow system base plates, tow bar, brake lights, with probably portable braking and maybe battery disconnect, for a 2016 Chevy Colorado Z71 with non-adaptive cruise. Recommendations?

Hey Eric, I can definitely help with that. I will start with a parts list then a few quick notes regarding your Colorado. Here is what I recommend:

- etrailer Invisible Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms # e98966

- etrailer XHD Non-Binding Tow Bar - RV Mount - 2" Hitch - 10,500 lbs # e94ZR

- Roadmaster 4-Diode Universal Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles - 7-Way to 6-Way Coiled Adapter Cord # RM-15267

- Roadmaster Battery Disconnect for Towed Vehicle w/ Flat Tow Brake System - Diesel # RM93MR

- Blue Ox Patriot Portable Flat Tow Brake System - Proportional # BLU37TR

- 12 Volt Outlet Kit, 20 amps # RM-9332

The battery disconnect is a requirement and one disconnect is required for each starter battery. Also the disconnect I mentioned above is for Diesel models. The 12v outlet will also be a requirement for the portable braking system.

You may need a drop hitch to compensate for any height differences between the base plate arms and the hitch on your RV. Any difference of more than 3" requires a drop hitch. If you need one, the Blue Ox # BLU28XR is what I recommend. I also recommend getting a cover # e76FV, and hitch lock # e98881 to protect your tow bar.

Hey Eric, how did your flat-tow setup for the Colorado turn out with the parts we went over? I’m curious if the wiring kit and battery disconnect worked smoothly together. Sharing what you found could really help others planning a similar setup.
