Will Redarc Brake Controller Work With Motorhome Towing Chevy Colorado

Updated 01/05/2025 | Published 12/25/2024

Question:

I just bought a motorcoach and I notice it has the REDARC EBRH-ACCV3-NA brake controller. I want to tow a Chevy Colorado behind the motorhome-is the TEDARC I have appropriate for that? If so, what connections do I need in the Colorado?

Hi Eric; the Redarc you have is a traditional brake controller that is designed for trailer brakes. It will only work with a trailer that has electric or electric over hydraulic brakes. It would be great if this could work for flat towing too but unfortunately, you will need a different kind of braking system to flat tow your 2016 Chevy Colorado. I'm assuming this is still the 2016 you asked about from the other day and not a 2022 like you added in our fitguide.

If your RV has hydraulic brakes I recommend the Demco Stay-IN-Play Duo Flat Tow Brake System for RVs w/ Hydraulic Brakes # SM99251. If it has air brakes you need the Demco Air Force One Flat Tow Brake System for RVs w/ Air Brakes # SM99243 instead. For a complete setup, you will also need a base plate kit, tow bar, safety cables, and tow bar wiring. I recommend the following:

-Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit # RM-523182-5 (assuming you do not have adaptive cruise control)

-Roadmaster BlackHawk 2 All-Terrain Non-Binding Tow Bar # RM-422

-Roadmaster 64" Single Hook, Straight Safety Cables # RM-645

-Roadmaster 4-Diode Universal Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles # RM-15267

-Roadmaster Battery Disconnect for Towed Vehicle w/ Flat Tow Brake System - Gas Only # RM-766

What is theblongest RJ45 cable that can be used on this unit? My coach is a 42' LONG diesel pusher. I want to install the unit at the rear and obviously have the control know at the dash.

@Chris I'm assuming you're referring to the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite # RED44FR referenced in the original question. Just to be clear, this is for towing a trailer, not towing a vehicle. Assuming you're towing a trailer it wouldn't make sense to run a longer cable from the main unit to the control knob. You still have to connect to 12V power and the brake light trigger so you would be running multiple wires the length of the motorhome. If you already have a 7-way the only thing you need to do is connect it to the brake output wire that runs back to the connector. If you don't have one you can run a single wire # 10-1-1 back to the connector from the brake controller.

@RobinH I am towing a trailer but the unit will be mounted at the back of the coach. The engine, relay and batteries are ar the rear. My question is what is the longest RJ45 cable I can run with the Redarc?

@Chris whatever length you need to make it work will be fine. We don't have a hard number but at 42' long you're fine even if you add in extra for some slack. Redarc recommends adding a ferrite bead on the end of the cable near the control unit to prevent radio interference on longer cables.
