Can Breakaway Battery Kit Work as a Power Source Dedicated Only to Interior Enclosed Trailer Lights

Updated 01/23/2026 | Published 09/11/2024

Question:

Good Morning, I have an 10, single axle enclosed trailer with out breaks. The trailer has led interior lights while connected to the tow vehicle. Can I install a breakaway battery on my trailer and use it for the lights while disconnected from the tow vehicle? I would like a product with the charger included, and I would just not connect the breakaway switch. I was looking at the Bright Way 3802346 or the Curt 52044. Thank You.

Hey Mark, great question!

As long as the Bright Way # 3802308 or Curt # C52044 breakaway kit isn't connected to trailer brakes (which it sounds like it wouldn't be in your case), then you can use it as a battery bank for your interior lights, yes.

Hey Mark, how did things go using the breakaway kit to power your trailer’s interior lights? Your results could really help others thinking about using a similar setup.

@RobinH Good Morning Robin, In the end, I did not use the breakaway kit. I did have a small solar panel that I connected to Battery Tender 5-45 Watt Automatic Solar Panel controller and a 12V 5.0AH battery. I used this to power some 12V truck bed lighting that I installed in the trailer. Kind of a hack but it made use of components I already had and it does the job for what I need. Thanks Robin. Mark.
