Can 205/75R15 Tire Be Upgraded to 225/75R15 with 1-3/4" Current Gap Between Sidewall and Frame

Updated 03/30/2024 | Published 03/29/2024

Question:

I have 205/75R15 on cargo trailer with 1-3/4 gap to the inside of trailer. Want to upgrade to 225/75R15. Plenty of room up top. Concerned about sidewall. Will they fit/rub? Thanks!

Thanks for reaching out, Joe!

I recommend sticking with the ST205/75R15 tire size, like the Kenda Karrier # AM32424. The larger size tire will cut into your sidewall clearance a little less than 1/2" and we typically recommend having at least 2" of clearance to your trailer frame just to be safe.

Is there a specific reason you're wanting to go with the larger size tire that I can try to help out with in another way?

I did a leaf spring flip using the E-Trailer kit. The 205's look incredibly small now lol but wanted to go with a bigger tire for weight, axle clearance and aesthetics. Is there a hub that will do the trick. Thanks!

@Joe Ah, I see. Thanks for the extra info! A hub won't give you extra width clearance and while some people will use wheel spacers we don't usually recommend doing that simply because it changes how the weight of the trailer is resting on the tire. Since you haven't changed the weight of your trailer I can't really recommend using a larger tire for fear that the sidewall will get damaged being that close to your frame.

@JonG One last question. How bout a rim with a negative offset? I won't have fender rub with the lift kit I did and it will keep the tire away from the frame.

@Joe An offset would help to keep the sidewall from hitting the trailer frame for sure. Unfortunately we don't have any standard wheels with an offset in this size so you'll need to order a special wheel from a trailer tire and wheel shop.
