Question:
Hi, our 2012 highlander has the Towing Prep Package but I dont know if any wiring is installed. Do I need your custom harness or the generic? Also, the vehicle did not come with a hitch, Ill be purchasing one from etrailer when I get the answer to this.

If your 2012 Toyota Highlander came with the factory towing package then it should already have a trailer connector. But if there isn't one you can use either a hardwire harness such as # C59236 or the plug in style # 118449. The plug in style is much easier to install. I have linked its instructions and a video showing installation on a 2012 Highlander.
I have also included a link to the hitches available for your Highlander if you have not decided on one. The most popular is Curt hitch # 13534. I have linked a video and instructions for the hitch as well.
To complete the towing set up I also recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts, 2 balls, a hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.

I don't think I have tow package since there wasn't a tow hitch. Which kit do I need for 2012 Highlander?
