Installation on 2014 and 2015 Toyota Highlander

2014-15 Toyota Highlander connection points

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness. The connection points for the 4-way tow harness and the ModuLite (converter) are located underneath the spare tire compartment. Once you've plugged in the ModuLite, locate the "towing fuse" position in your fuse box and insert the included 10-amp fuse.

Installation on 2013 and Earlier Toyota Highlander

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness. The connection point for the 4-way tow harness is located behind the driver's-side interior trim panel in your rear cargo area. The ModuLite plugs into the factory wiring harness beneath your dash, on the driver's side. Once you've plugged in the ModuLite, locate the "towing fuse" position in your fuse box and insert the included 10-amp fuse.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

ModuLite Powered Tail Light Converter

A ModuLite power module is built into this T-One connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This power module functions as a tail light converter to combine the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

With a ModuLite, your trailer's lights will be powered without overloading your vehicle's electrical system. Because the module draws power directly from your car's battery and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Video Transcript for Tekonsha Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - 118449 Review

Today, we'll be reviewing part number 118449. This is the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness from Tow Ready. This is going to provide a 4 way flat trailer connector at the back of your vehicle. It's a power of your trailer's signal lights. It is going to be compatible to 5-pole, 6-pole, and 7-pole adapters, are all sold separately. To see if this is going to fit your particular year, make, and model, you can refer to the vehicle list at the bottom of our product page. The system's going to connect quickly and easily, so no cutting or splicing of wires is necessary. This portion here is the module light. This is included to ensure that your vehicle's wiring matches that of your trailer. The power of module connects directly to the battery to avoid overloading of the vehicle's electrical system. The unit's going to be constructed of 16 gauge bonded wire.

Here on the 4 way flat, it's going to come with the dust cap that's attached. It just fits over the connection points to help protect those from the elements. You're also going to get 4 smaller zip ties with 1 larger one and you're going to get the included fuse. When it comes to maximum amperage, your stop and turn lights are going to provide 2.1 amps per circuit and tail lights are going to be 5.6 amps per circuit. When it comes to installing this unit, all you need to do is find your vehicle's wiring harness. You're going to plug in the module light with the 10 pin and then you'll also need to locate the towing fuse position in your fuse box and then insert the included 10 amp fuse. The connector right here simply plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness. You're going to have the 4 way flat connector towards the rear of your vehicle. You can store that in a nice compartment to keep it out of the way when not in use. Once your installation is complete, the 4 way flat connector will be stored in another way.

The module light with this, you can be assured that your trailer's lights are going to be powered without overloading your vehicle's electrical system. Because the module draws power directly from your car's battery and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness, there's going to be virtually no draw on your tail lights circuits. Depending on the year of your vehicle where you connect your module, may be located in different positions on different year of vehicles. You need to be sure to check out the instructions and we provide a lot of helpful links here at etrailer.com, that can assist you in making sure you get everything installed correctly, and that you know exactly where the connection points are. That's going to do it for our review of part number 118449. This is the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness from Tow Ready. .

This is a very good product and was easy to install with the help of the video online. However the wire running from the back to the trailer hookup was short. Another 8-12 inches would have brought the reach to the ball where it should lead to. I had to rerun the wire out the back of the tailgate so it would reach the trailer hookup. For about the $50 I spent with shipping I would have expected a little more slack. I will now have to get a extension so I can run the wire underneath as it should be. 66481

Ford Edge

I purchased and installed a T-One wiring harness over the Curt for the simple reason that the Curt kit requires drilling a hole for the ground wire, and I hate doing that. It was very easy thanks to the well done install video on your website. One thing I did differently than the video was I cut a small hole in the bumper side of the underfloor tray to poke the hitch wire AND the in-line fuse holder through, to ensure access to change the fuse without having to take out the whole tray. The wire with the fuse holder was a little short to just pull over the edge of the tray and dictated where I had to cut the hole. I once tried to rent an old rental trailer with my minivan and some sort of short blew the fuse. Because it was easily accessible behind a removable panel, I was able to diagnose and change it easily. So, I wanted to make sure this fuse would be similarly accessible. Thanks etrailer! 551029

This is my second! I was towing a boat home, which wasn't hooked up in 10 years. Something was wrong with the trailer and blew the fuse. I didn't have the 10 amp fuse to replace it, and I was 80 miles from home. I checked the wiring on the trailer to make sure it was routed correctly. I took a chance and used a 15 amp fuse to avoid a costly ticket on the interstate. It worked, but I did something wrong to the left hand signal. SO, I'm buying another one AND I bought a box of the correct size 10 amp fuses for the underhood AND under dash fuse holders. E trailer got me the part quickly, and despite my stupidity, I paid $100 less than if I went to the dealer. Do a search for Matt D. last year for a review and picture of my hitch and wiring install. 86014

I called customer service before ordering the product and talked to Nicky K. I was unable to view the instructions for the 2014-2015 highlander I was buying the product for. Nicky sent me a copy of the instructions and I ordered the product. Delivery time was 4 days with standard shipping and the product arrived exactly as described. Installation time was about 20-30 minutes, and most of that was just removing and re-installing the trim panels. Plug in 2 connectors, secure wires with included zip ties, install fuse, test and done. I got a follow up email from Nicky K making sure I was happy with the product. I give this company 5 stars, For the product, and especially the customer support. Would buy form etrailer again. 164381

This wire harness was exactly as expected. Installation was soooo easy. I didn’t even look at the instructions, just followed along with the video that told me what each part was, how to get to the wiring (very specific directions), how to connect, how to reassemble car, and how to test. Works perfect! 506251

I almost brought the wiring harness to my local mechanic and not fuss with it, but when I saw the excellent video on how to put it in, I decided to do it myself. And I'm glad I did. It took about 15 pendantic minutes to install it, included double checking all the instructions. It seemed too easy, two connectors to snap together and a fuse to put in. It was a piece of cake! I had previously purchased the flat 4-pin connector thinking I'd do it myself, but when I opened the back and saw the profusion of wires, I was overwhelmed. This product was a great choice. 68595

Haven't towed yet, but assume it will work fine. The instructions are lacking for the install in the back. Removal of the cover behind the 3rd roll seat in my 2012 Highlander is necessary to remove the tray under which is the plugin. I just had to pull it out. There are hidden plastic clips that could break, but there is no way that I could see to squeeze the tabs to remove the cover. Fortunately, I didn't break the tabs. Also the wire is too barely long enough to reach the hitch if it is run down through the bottom of the tray to the hitch rather than hanging it out of the trunk per the instructions. 55047

The harness works as stated however I did not like the idea of having to pull the 4 way plug out every time I wanted to use it. Fortunately it is long enough to run it out through a hole in the floorboard under the storage tray on the drivers side that has a rubber plug you can slice and slide around the wire harness and run it out close to the hitch receiver and mount with after market brackets available from etrailer 334804

Great product. Easy to install (2011 Highlander SE). Fit perfectly. I ran my wiring thru the rubber grommet under the left tray and then under the chassis as described in another customer's review (my pic is prior to sealing the cut with silicone). The product's instruction sheet was good but pics a bit hard to see clearly. etrailer.com's videos really helped. Disclaimer: the wire routing described is not spec'd by the mfr. in the instructions. It's only an option for you if you choose. 21877

Great standard shipping time was in stock and ordered Saturday received Tuesday. Installed Tuesday night in no time. The only issue is the install of rear Tow-Plug Adapter on Toyota 2013 Highlander Hybrid is different that the pictures in the instructions. In the Toyota 2013 Highlander Hybrid they (Toyota) moved the 12 volt battery into the back driver side compartment, still has the same connector (see picture) 75257

After reading other reviews and watching the simple how-to video on e-trailer this product (118449) was extremely easy to install and works as expected. I would recommend this to anyone looking to install their own harness on the 2012 Highlander. The only thing that I would like to see added is another thin plug/receptacle that can fit through a splice in the rubber grommets at the rear of the vehicle (so the 4-pole connector can be mounted permanently outside the vehicle). The existing 4 pin connectors on both ends are too large to feed through the vehicle body grommets. Instead I spliced the wires, ran them through the grommet, and re-soldered and heat shrank the wires for a solid connection. I intentionally spliced the wires closer to the plug internal to the vehicle to avoid problems with dust, grime, and corrosion. To mount the 4-pole connector outside the vehicle I paired this product with 18144 and 18140, at the suggestion of customer service at e-trailer. (Customer service was wonderful!) This worked splendidly. I'm very happy with the end result, and considering my total cost was about 1/3 to 1/2 the price of a factory installed version I don't think there's a better option. Incidentally, I have a Curt hitch which has round bars underneath. This posed no problems for the no-drill mount. It seems to secure tight enough to remove all play from the mounting bracket (18140). All in all I'm very happy with customer service and all three products I used for this project. 48964

Got this wiring harness a year ago when adding a hitch to my 2012 Toyota Highlander. Was a perfect fit and the length between the internal connector and the outside connector was more than adequate. I modified the Highlander's factory rubber plug in the routing hole by cutting a slice in half of the plug's diameter then drilling out a hole in the plug just large enough to accommodate the wire. Provides a perfect seal. The harness's external connector is solid and reliable and, surprisingly, the connector's rubber cover cap stays on through car washes and foul weather. I've used the connector 13 times since the installation and it does the job every time. 358357

Installed on a 2011 Toyota Highlander Base Model Although the instructions missed some parts on my 3rd row seating model, they were very readable and the installation went quickly. I'll only point out a few things I saw that strayed from the written word, and something that I "modified" for your consideration. I hope this is not considered something that would affect safety/warranty. Under the dash, the converter box has sticky tape. I couldn't find anything that this would stick to (it just came off once stuck), so I just zip tied it in place. In the back, there are no instructions on how to remove the "folding cover" for the third row seat. I ended up just pulling it out, which probably wasn't the best. I got lucky, and none of the blind fasteners broke off. Once this folding cover is removed, there's a sticky "tab" that goes over the box over the trailer lighting connector. It's straight forward enough, but not explicitly mentioned. I did not like the idea of the 4 way flat sticking out the back door. Maybe it would be okay for occasional use, but I'd rather have it under the vehicle. Plus, I use a lighted hitch cover that would not work well if the wire went out the door. Under the tray that is removed to access the trailer connector, there is a large drain/access plug in the steel floor. I removed this plug, then used a sharp utility knife to X out the center of the rubber plug. I only cut enough out to allow the vehicle connector (not the trailer connector, which is larger) to be pushed through; up from the bottom. I replaced the plug in the vehicle, then routed the wires along a factory harness to the connector. I filled the rubber plug with silicone to stop water and fumes from entering the cabin, then replaced all the interior bins and covers. Under the car, the wiring set is just long enough to reach the hitch. Here I have it plugged into a lighted hitch cover. I keep a 4 foot 4 way flat extension in the vehicle with the draw bar for when I'm towing. Overall, I'm very satisfied with etrailer.com and their products. Not everything goes to plan, but the products themselves are very good. The price of this DIY job was 1/3 of the cost that the dealer wanted, and I know it was done right. I will buy from them again. (In the pic, the hitch wiring lights up my hitch cover, which I didn't buy from etrailer.com, but had from a previous vehicle). 8703

Product worked as advertised. After being told by the dealership and the installer of the hitch that my 2012 Highlander had wiring problems and no voltage could be obtained at the rear plugin for the electrical harness for the trailer hitch, I decided to handle the "problem" myself. The dealership quoted a price of $490 to "fix" the problem. The hitch installer opted out completely. I contacted etrailer after viewing their video and having seen the controller which fit under the dash and they reassured me that the controller in the kit would cure the "problem" and that the system was designed for this. I ordered the part and received it a few days later. Installation took about 15 minutes and after testing the installation, everything worked as advertised. Cost was about $50. I can excuse the trailer hitch installer for their ignorance, but the dealership is another story. This is not the first time I have gotten expensive and erroneous information from them, and they seem bent on extracting the maximum amount of cash from their customers, and know no more about their product than any mechanic on the street. By the way, I mentioned the controller solution to the parts manager, the mechanic working on my vehicle, the service manager and the service adviser and ALL were on the same page with the story about having to replace the wiring harness from under the hood to the rear of the vehicle. Etrailer knows their business and, apparantly, knows it better than the dealership. Good video information, fast response to customer inquiries, parts that work, and a great return policy. Now that is customer frienly. 294078

Installation could not have been easier. The video on the e-trailer website for installation in the Highlander was a great help. Even though the vehicle came with the factory tow-prep package that includes a wiring harness, the T-One harness or equivalent is still required. Go figure. As an earlier reviewer noted, with the third-row seat it is necessary to remove the driver-side flip-up third-row cover (the piece just ahead of the tool kit cover). Easy enough to do by simply laying down the rear seat and prying up the rear edge of the cover to loosen the clips. See the attached photos, the first with the cover in place, and the second with it removed. It is necessary to remove this cover to permit removal of the left-side tray to gain access to the existing harness and plug. One other piece of advice is to thoroughly clean the surface to which the box will be mounted to assure a strong bond with the included two-sided tape. I used alcohol-soaked gauze. The price through e-trailer was the best I could find anywhere, and the service was second-to-none! 19328

There are a three things that really stood out for me. First, the installation instructions were easy to follow and involved little "trial and error". Although having three people guide the hitch into place for initial attachment is recommended. The wiring harness was easy-peasy! Second, I use this hitch mostly for pulling light loads around town, but, the week after installation I pulled a 12' tandem-wheel cargo trailer full of furniture over 800 miles through three mountain passes without a problem. Third, and more service related, the self-help tips on etrailer's website are invaluable. 478210

I had trouble arranging trialer light installation from my dealer AND they wanted $230. In addition, I needed it quickly since we were hauling a trailer on vacation in less than a week. So I went online looking for another option. I came across this product, watched the video and decided to give the DIY route a try. I ordered the part on Sunday with 2 day shipping (still way less expensive than the dealer) and crossed my fingers. A short time later I received confirmation that the part was in stock and on its way. Whew... It arrived on Wednesday evening and within an hour of receipt, was installed and ready to go. It was very easy and quick to install. The installation video provided on the web site was invaluable. This was the first time ever hooking up trailer lights and having them work correctly from the get-go! Even my father, who is old-school and skeptical was impressed... Lights worked with no troubles for our vacation and for that, I thank you! 52555

2017 Toyota Highlander

This was easy to install and the instructions were great. My rating has more to do with the design. The converter wires are not long enough. As it stands now the fuse is now found under the tool tray (2017 Toyota Highlander). So if that fuse blows, the back part of the interior will have to be disassembled, not a pleasant thought if we are on the road. The wires should be long enough to plug into the Highlander wiring and then extend so that the fuse sits under the container tray on the far left side of the vehicle. This is a readily accessible compartment where it would be easy to change the fuse even on the road. Similarly, the 4 pole wires could be longer so they can be routed under the vehicle. On the 2017 Highlander there is a grommet on the far left side under the container compartment to allow the wire to be routed easily to the underside of the vehicle. But from the connection point in the vehicle (about midpoint) there is not enough length of wire to route the 4 pole connector out the grommet and then back to the center point where the hitch is. I am not a fan of draping the wires out through the hatch, but that is the only viable option at this point. So good product but needs more length to both components to make it optimally functional. 416952

Very easy installation, might have taken an hour, but I want to say it was closer to 30 min. My mechanic “doesn’t touch electrical alterations” which is why I had to do it. Bought a tester from [other on-line retailer] to verify brakes and signals so that I know it’s good to go. 651565

To say that the instructions were perfect and the installation was 5 times easier than I thought would still be an understatement. Very easy installation in a 2016 Highlander; anyone with basic skills can do this with professional results. 30 minutes job if you are slow like me. The only tools you will need are a 10mm wrench or socket, and an auto trim removal tool for popping up the carpet from the rear tray. No wires to cut, or splicing; very clean plugs to connect with built-in plugs already in Highlander. Too easy! 643078

Excellent fit. Plugs match 2011 Highlander exactly. This is the wiring set needed for my tow package Highlander because the vehicle does not have the unde dash left of steering column control module. This set has it and it easily plugs into the white plug at that location. Don't forget to install the tiny 10 amp fuse into the engine area fuse box. The hitch installation went smoothly as the detailed instructions were clear and the printed photos helped. Where we ran into difficulty was with the wiring harness installation. An e-mail to etrailer was promptly answered and included were links to clear, correct, written installation instructions and a link to an excellent video that made the install a snap. We completed the project in 15 minutes after viewing the video and following their written instructions which we had printed. There was a 10 amp, mini-fuse in the box and the video was perfect in showing where to install it in the vehicle fuse block under the hood. My rating for the engineering of the hitch, instructions for the install, the video for the wiring harness install, and the prompt and thorough help by etrailer personnel = A++ 634637

My trailer hitch and wiring harness arrived within two days. All needed parts were included. The videos online were excellent and all the parts lined up perfectly. Excellent recommendations on the website. The only suggestion that would have been helpful, as a non- mechanic layperson, would have been a specific warning that the bolts/ screws on my vehicle are metric. Fortunately the friend who helped me install it had a large metric socket set. The bolts to attach the hitch were SAE, so no problem there. Very pleased with your product, service, and website. Saved me $500.00 compared to dealership quote. 622078

2 hrs. to install. Wiring was so easy I thought I must have screwed it up, apparently not, everything working terrific. I tow an 11' Zodiac with a 20hp Merc and a 21' Sea Ray Bowrider with I/O Merc. V/8.....no issues. Good price, backyard install, looks good, finish still looks as new, this is a can't miss for do-it-yourselfers! Heck, buy it and take to your shop to install. Either way it's a solid product. 611647

  • Can Brake Controller Install in 2018 Toyota Highlander
  • The newest Toyota Highlander we've installed a brake controller in is a 2014 model. I attached the install video to this page to show you the processs. The 2014 and 2018 Highlanders are the same generation though so what you see in the install video would be the same as on your vehicle. Tekonsha (the maker of our nicer brake controllers) has informed us that they have successfully installed brake controllers in your vehicle so I would not anticipate a problem. That said, Toyota is the...

  • Recommended Trailer Wiring For 2017 Toyota Highlander To Tow Camper With 7-Way Connector
  • If you have the factory tow package and have a converter under the dash of your 2017 Highlander the wiring harness I recommend is the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness, part # 56042. This simply plugs into the factory tow package wiring harness located behind the driver side trim panel in the rear cargo area. If you do not have a toe package and converter, I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness, part # 118449. The connection points for this are located under the spare tire...

  • Concealed Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2018 Toyota Highlander
  • Your 2018 Toyota Highlander the Draw Tite hitch part # 76156 that you referenced is a confirmed fit and would be exactly what you'd want since you said you only wanted the hitch tube to be visible. I attached an install video for this for you to check out as well. For trailer wiring you'd then want the # 118449 which is also a confirmed fit and our most reliable option. Install video attached below for this as well. If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer...

  • What is the Ground Clearance with Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Installed on a 2016 Toyota Highlander
  • From the ground to the bottom of the receiver on Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 76156 for the 2016 Toyota Highlander it is approximately 13-1/2 inches. There are exhaust and other components that are actually lower on the vehicle just not as far back as the hitch. I have linked a video showing an example installation of the hitch for you. If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and...

  • Best 2-Inch Hitch for 2018 Toyota Highlander
  • There are both Class III and Class IV hitches made for your 2018 Highlander but all are the 2-inch receiver size. The one I recommend for its combination of high capacity, easier installation and value is the etrailer hitch # e98844 which offers 900-lb tongue weight and 6K towing ratings. This hitch will easily handle your towing and bike rack applications and it is compatible with your spare tire. Please refer to the linked installation video and the photo of this hitch installed...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch & Wiring for 2017 Toyota Highlander XLE Hybrid
  • For your 2017 Toyota Highlander XLE Hybrid the hitch I recommend is the USA-made etrailer 2-inch model # e98844 because it is compatible with your hybrid and because it offers easier no-drill installation than some of the other options. It is also compatible with a full size spare tire so long as that tire is not on an aluminum rim. I linked an installation video along with the written instructions so you can see the whole process. The etrailer hitch # e98844 has a substantial 900-lb...

  • Adding Wiring for a Brake Controller on a 2017 Toyota Highlander
  • If your 2017 Toyota Highlander already has a 4-Way wiring harness installed near the rear bumper then the kit you are looking for is the Universal Installation Kit # ETBC7. This wiring harness will convert your 4-Way to a 4-Way and 7-Way so that you can tow a trailer that uses either of those harnesses. The installation is actually pretty easy. Just plug the # ETBC7 into your existing 4-Way, install the mounting bracket to your trailer hitch (you can use a No-Drill mounting bracket #...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2017 Toyota Highlander with Full Sized Spare Tire
  • For your 2017 Toyota Highlander that has a full sized spare, I recommend the Draw-Tite Class IV Max Frame Round Tube Receiver Hitch # 75896. This hitch is custom-fit for your vehicle and will allow your full size spare tire to remain stowed under the Highlander. I have attached an image that shows the hitch installed on your 2017 Highlander with the spare tire still in place. This Class IV trailer hitch will provide you with a 2 inch receiver opening and a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds,...

  • How to Determine if My 2008 Toyota Highlander Has the Factory Tow Package
  • If your 2008 Toyota Highlander has a converter box under the dashboard already then you have the factory tow package. To give you an idea of what to look for I've attached a video of the trailer wiring being installed onto a Highlander without the tow package. If you watch around the 30 second mark you will see the converter box being plugged in. Also, you can verify with Toyota using your VIN to be completely sure if your Highlander has the factory tow package. If you do not have...

  • What Is different Between Curt And Tekonsha Wiring Harness For 2016 Toyota Highlander
  • Basically, the different between the Curt wiring harness, part # C56217 and the -One Vehicle Wiring Harness, part # 118449 is they are made by different manufacturers. Both the Curt wiring harness, part # C56217 and the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness, part # 118449 harnesses plug in the same way(behind the tail lights), and both have a powered converter. They both have a 4-way trailer connector. The # C56217 has a maximum amperage output of 3-amps for the stop/turn lights and 6-amps...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2018 Toyota Highlander that Allows Full Size Spare
  • For your 2018 Toyota Highlander the Draw Tite hitch part # 76156 is what I recommend for you as it allows you to keep the full size spare like you want and because it has a concealed crosstube which means it will be less visible than other hitches. See attached picture and install video for more info. If you need trailer wiring the 4-way the kit you'd want is the part # 118449 or if you need a 7-way part # 22119. Both of these kits have the most reliable converter boxes around so they...
