Installation on 2014 and 2015 Toyota Highlander

2014-15 Toyota Highlander connection points

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness. The connection points for the 4-way tow harness and the ModuLite (converter) are located underneath the spare tire compartment. Once you've plugged in the ModuLite, locate the "towing fuse" position in your fuse box and insert the included 10-amp fuse.

Installation on 2013 and Earlier Toyota Highlander

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness. The connection point for the 4-way tow harness is located behind the driver's-side interior trim panel in your rear cargo area. The ModuLite plugs into the factory wiring harness beneath your dash, on the driver's side. Once you've plugged in the ModuLite, locate the "towing fuse" position in your fuse box and insert the included 10-amp fuse.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

ModuLite Powered Tail Light Converter

A ModuLite power module is built into this T-One connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This power module functions as a tail light converter to combine the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

With a ModuLite, your trailer's lights will be powered without overloading your vehicle's electrical system. Because the module draws power directly from your car's battery and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2018 Toyota Highlander

Speaker 1: Today on our 2018 Toyota Highlander we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Tekonsha T-One vehicle wiring harness with four-pole flat trailer connector, that's gonna be part number 118449.Here's what our wiring's gonna look like once we have it installed. It is gonna stay on the inside of the vehicle until we're ready to use it and it's gonna provide us with a four-pole flat trailer connector which is gonna give us all the required lights to get down the road safely and within the law such as our taillights, brake lights, and our turn signals. Whenever we're not towing we can simply take our wire, come to the hatch of our vehicle, and it'll store right here right by our spare tire tools so it'll be ready for us whenever we need our trailer. Now the nice thing about our wiring is that it's gonna be a simple installation and it's gonna be tailor made specifically for our Highlander. We're only gonna have a few connections to make and one fuse to put in underneath the hood and then we'll have our wiring ready. Now that we've seen what our wiring looks like and seen the end result let's show you how to get it installed. To begin our installation you want to come to your rear hatch and we're gonna take any kind of floor coverings like this mat and we're gonna fold them out of the way so that we can get access to the very back section here. Now we're gonna lift up on this panel and we are gonna remove it for now and set it aside. Now the plastic cover panel over here on the driver's side we're gonna remove as well.

That's gonna give us access to this panel and compartment right here. Now it's held in by clips so if we just grab the edge right here and pull up it'll pop out of the clips and we can remove it and set it aside. Now towards the front right where our spare tire tools are we're gonna have this carpet covering on the floor and we're gonna need to remove these pushpin fasteners. You're gonna grab a flat head screwdriver or a trim panel tool and we're just gonna pop them out and there's gonna be a total of seven of these spanning across the back of the vehicle. Now all the way over on the driver's side there is gonna be a 10 millimeter nut holding that plastic panel with our spare tire tools in place. You're gonna want to grab a 10 millimeter socket and pull that nut out.

Now the panel is only held in with clips now so we're gonna start here over on the side and we're gonna slowly work our way to the other side of the vehicle, just want to grab the panel and start pulling upwards which is gonna release the clips and once we have it loose we pull it out and set it aside. Now our wiring harness is gonna be a two piece section. First we'll start with our four-pole flat trailer end. We're gonna be looking for a four-pin connector which is gonna be on the back of the threshold here. Right by the latch on the inside we'll have our four-pin connector right here so we can take our harness and we can plug it directly in and make sure it locks in and give it a nice quick little tug. We can set the four-pole aside and now we're gonna be looking for a larger connector which should be right to the left or towards the driver's side of that original plug we just plugged in.

We can take our harness now and again plug it in, make sure it latches, now all we need to do is find a spot to mount our converter box and clean up the wires back here. Now there's gonna be a couple different ways that we can mount our converter box, we can use the double sided tape that is provided in our kit and stick it to a nice, flat surface provided that it is clean or we have an eyelet right here at the top to where we can take one of the included zip ties, pass it through, and tie it to some existing wiring. I'm gonna tie mine to some existing wiring back here because it would be nice and out of the way and I don't have to worry about it interfering with anything. Secure it with our zip tie, just want to make sure that once we have it secure that it's not gonna interfere with the panels that go in here. Now on our four-pole wiring I'm gonna route towards the driver's side, I'm actually gonna take all of my wires here on the driver's side and I'm just gonna take another one of those included zip ties and I'm gonna tie it to some of this factory wiring so it's nice and out of the way, then we can start to put our panels back in place. When you're putting your panels back just want to make sure that that carpet is on top of the spare tire tool compartment just like the way we took it out. You're wanna be extra careful lining up all the pushpins because you don't want to break any of those. My four-pole wiring I routed all the way over so I don't have to worry about it interfering or coming up through the panel because it'll be right here ready for us whenever we're ready to tow.

Put all our pushpins back in place and then we can replace that 10 millimeter nut over on the side panel. We need to put our panels back in place, just want to be careful of your wiring you don't want to put it right in line with those pushpins and damage the wire. With our wires ran back here we're gonna go ahead and need to go underneath the hood and put a fuse in place. Underneath the hood right behind our battery on the driver's side, all the way to the left, we're gonna find our fuse panel. We can just push onto this tab and remove the cover. Now if we come to the second row on the black section of our fuse panel if we come from the front we're gonna be looking for an open spot in between two seven and a half amp fuses. That's gonna be our towing port and if we look on our cover it will say that it's the towing section. We can take the provided 10 amps fuse in our kit and plug it in. Now we can go back and test our wiring. Now to make sure my wiring's working properly I'm gonna take my four-pole tester and if you need one of these you can pick one up on our website using part number I26. I'll grab an extra set of hands so they can run my lights and I can verify that they're all working properly. Can I have the headlights please Looks good. Left turn signal Right turn signal And the brakes Good. Can I get the brakes and both turn signals please All right with everything looking good we're ready to hook up to our trailer and hit the road. Now even though the wiring's on the inside I'm gonna go ahead and take the dust cap that is provided on there and go ahead and plug it up and we can keep our wiring right back here by our spare tire tools. Whenever we are ready to use our wiring we simply come to the cover, lift up, pull out the excess wire, and we're not gonna have to worry about the wire getting damaged from the hatch closing because we're gonna have this soft, rubber weather stripping which is gonna provide a lot of protection for the wire, provided that we just stay away from the latch itself. That'll finish up your look at the Tekonsha T-One vehicle wiring harness with four-pole flat trailer connector, part number 118449 on our 2018 Toyota Highlander.

Very easy to install comes with everything you need. only thing would be nice is if the lead for the plug was like 6 inches long for the way i routed it 707377

Great hitch!! Relatively easy to install and at a great savings over what you would pay at the dealership. I just pull a utility trailer and don't need electric brakes. I bought the electrical kit that allowed me to connect to the factory wiring with no cutting/splicing. I saw a Youtube video in which a fellow used a floor jack with the hitch connected with Vicegrip pliers and used that example to install by myself. Completely satisfied with the Draw-Tite hitch and etrailer.com 690536

Ultra simple and straightforward installation. Literally a snap. Tying back wires and tucking everything away took the most time. About an hour in all (I'm slow). Great product. 679559

Product is great. Only problem is that the instructions didn’t tell which space to put the 10 amp fuse. Had to find on internet. Overall very satisfied. 691494

Haven't towed yet, but assume it will work fine. The instructions are lacking for the install in the back. Removal of the cover behind the 3rd roll seat in my 2012 Highlander is necessary to remove the tray under which is the plugin. I just had to pull it out. There are hidden plastic clips that could break, but there is no way that I could see to squeeze the tabs to remove the cover. Fortunately, I didn't break the tabs. Also the wire is too barely long enough to reach the hitch if it is run down through the bottom of the tray to the hitch rather than hanging it out of the trunk per the instructions. 55047

Got this wiring harness a year ago when adding a hitch to my 2012 Toyota Highlander. Was a perfect fit and the length between the internal connector and the outside connector was more than adequate. I modified the Highlander's factory rubber plug in the routing hole by cutting a slice in half of the plug's diameter then drilling out a hole in the plug just large enough to accommodate the wire. Provides a perfect seal. The harness's external connector is solid and reliable and, surprisingly, the connector's rubber cover cap stays on through car washes and foul weather. I've used the connector 13 times since the installation and it does the job every time. 358357

Still working great and the rubber connector cap stays on. Good add it gets!

This is a very good product and was easy to install with the help of the video online. However the wire running from the back to the trailer hookup was short. Another 8-12 inches would have brought the reach to the ball where it should lead to. I had to rerun the wire out the back of the tailgate so it would reach the trailer hookup. For about the $50 I spent with shipping I would have expected a little more slack. I will now have to get a extension so I can run the wire underneath as it should be. 66481

Great product. Easy to install (2011 Highlander SE). Fit perfectly. I ran my wiring thru the rubber grommet under the left tray and then under the chassis as described in another customer's review (my pic is prior to sealing the cut with silicone). The product's instruction sheet was good but pics a bit hard to see clearly. etrailer.com's videos really helped. Disclaimer: the wire routing described is not spec'd by the mfr. in the instructions. It's only an option for you if you choose. 21877

There are a three things that really stood out for me. First, the installation instructions were easy to follow and involved little "trial and error". Although having three people guide the hitch into place for initial attachment is recommended. The wiring harness was easy-peasy! Second, I use this hitch mostly for pulling light loads around town, but, the week after installation I pulled a 12' tandem-wheel cargo trailer full of furniture over 800 miles through three mountain passes without a problem. Third, and more service related, the self-help tips on etrailer's website are invaluable. 478210

This is my second! I was towing a boat home, which wasn't hooked up in 10 years. Something was wrong with the trailer and blew the fuse. I didn't have the 10 amp fuse to replace it, and I was 80 miles from home. I checked the wiring on the trailer to make sure it was routed correctly. I took a chance and used a 15 amp fuse to avoid a costly ticket on the interstate. It worked, but I did something wrong to the left hand signal. SO, I'm buying another one AND I bought a box of the correct size 10 amp fuses for the underhood AND under dash fuse holders. E trailer got me the part quickly, and despite my stupidity, I paid $100 less than if I went to the dealer. Do a search for Matt D. last year for a review and picture of my hitch and wiring install. 86014

Installed on a 2011 Toyota Highlander Base Model Although the instructions missed some parts on my 3rd row seating model, they were very readable and the installation went quickly. I'll only point out a few things I saw that strayed from the written word, and something that I "modified" for your consideration. I hope this is not considered something that would affect safety/warranty. Under the dash, the converter box has sticky tape. I couldn't find anything that this would stick to (it just came off once stuck), so I just zip tied it in place. In the back, there are no instructions on how to remove the "folding cover" for the third row seat. I ended up just pulling it out, which probably wasn't the best. I got lucky, and none of the blind fasteners broke off. Once this folding cover is removed, there's a sticky "tab" that goes over the box over the trailer lighting connector. It's straight forward enough, but not explicitly mentioned. I did not like the idea of the 4 way flat sticking out the back door. Maybe it would be okay for occasional use, but I'd rather have it under the vehicle. Plus, I use a lighted hitch cover that would not work well if the wire went out the door. Under the tray that is removed to access the trailer connector, there is a large drain/access plug in the steel floor. I removed this plug, then used a sharp utility knife to X out the center of the rubber plug. I only cut enough out to allow the vehicle connector (not the trailer connector, which is larger) to be pushed through; up from the bottom. I replaced the plug in the vehicle, then routed the wires along a factory harness to the connector. I filled the rubber plug with silicone to stop water and fumes from entering the cabin, then replaced all the interior bins and covers. Under the car, the wiring set is just long enough to reach the hitch. Here I have it plugged into a lighted hitch cover. I keep a 4 foot 4 way flat extension in the vehicle with the draw bar for when I'm towing. Overall, I'm very satisfied with etrailer.com and their products. Not everything goes to plan, but the products themselves are very good. The price of this DIY job was 1/3 of the cost that the dealer wanted, and I know it was done right. I will buy from them again. (In the pic, the hitch wiring lights up my hitch cover, which I didn't buy from etrailer.com, but had from a previous vehicle). 8703

2017 Toyota Highlander

This was easy to install and the instructions were great. My rating has more to do with the design. The converter wires are not long enough. As it stands now the fuse is now found under the tool tray (2017 Toyota Highlander). So if that fuse blows, the back part of the interior will have to be disassembled, not a pleasant thought if we are on the road. The wires should be long enough to plug into the Highlander wiring and then extend so that the fuse sits under the container tray on the far left side of the vehicle. This is a readily accessible compartment where it would be easy to change the fuse even on the road. Similarly, the 4 pole wires could be longer so they can be routed under the vehicle. On the 2017 Highlander there is a grommet on the far left side under the container compartment to allow the wire to be routed easily to the underside of the vehicle. But from the connection point in the vehicle (about midpoint) there is not enough length of wire to route the 4 pole connector out the grommet and then back to the center point where the hitch is. I am not a fan of draping the wires out through the hatch, but that is the only viable option at this point. So good product but needs more length to both components to make it optimally functional. 416952

Great standard shipping time was in stock and ordered Saturday received Tuesday. Installed Tuesday night in no time. The only issue is the install of rear Tow-Plug Adapter on Toyota 2013 Highlander Hybrid is different that the pictures in the instructions. In the Toyota 2013 Highlander Hybrid they (Toyota) moved the 12 volt battery into the back driver side compartment, still has the same connector (see picture) 75257

I almost brought the wiring harness to my local mechanic and not fuss with it, but when I saw the excellent video on how to put it in, I decided to do it myself. And I'm glad I did. It took about 15 pendantic minutes to install it, included double checking all the instructions. It seemed too easy, two connectors to snap together and a fuse to put in. It was a piece of cake! I had previously purchased the flat 4-pin connector thinking I'd do it myself, but when I opened the back and saw the profusion of wires, I was overwhelmed. This product was a great choice. 68595

Product worked as advertised. After being told by the dealership and the installer of the hitch that my 2012 Highlander had wiring problems and no voltage could be obtained at the rear plugin for the electrical harness for the trailer hitch, I decided to handle the "problem" myself. The dealership quoted a price of $490 to "fix" the problem. The hitch installer opted out completely. I contacted etrailer after viewing their video and having seen the controller which fit under the dash and they reassured me that the controller in the kit would cure the "problem" and that the system was designed for this. I ordered the part and received it a few days later. Installation took about 15 minutes and after testing the installation, everything worked as advertised. Cost was about $50. I can excuse the trailer hitch installer for their ignorance, but the dealership is another story. This is not the first time I have gotten expensive and erroneous information from them, and they seem bent on extracting the maximum amount of cash from their customers, and know no more about their product than any mechanic on the street. By the way, I mentioned the controller solution to the parts manager, the mechanic working on my vehicle, the service manager and the service adviser and ALL were on the same page with the story about having to replace the wiring harness from under the hood to the rear of the vehicle. Etrailer knows their business and, apparantly, knows it better than the dealership. Good video information, fast response to customer inquiries, parts that work, and a great return policy. Now that is customer frienly. 294078

Ford Edge

I purchased and installed a T-One wiring harness over the Curt for the simple reason that the Curt kit requires drilling a hole for the ground wire, and I hate doing that. It was very easy thanks to the well done install video on your website. One thing I did differently than the video was I cut a small hole in the bumper side of the underfloor tray to poke the hitch wire AND the in-line fuse holder through, to ensure access to change the fuse without having to take out the whole tray. The wire with the fuse holder was a little short to just pull over the edge of the tray and dictated where I had to cut the hole. I once tried to rent an old rental trailer with my minivan and some sort of short blew the fuse. Because it was easily accessible behind a removable panel, I was able to diagnose and change it easily. So, I wanted to make sure this fuse would be similarly accessible. Thanks etrailer! 551029

2018 Highlander: Great Product and really appreciate the installation videos. Recommend better packaging. Things to note about installation of wiring. Super easy, but there was no mini 10 amp fuse included, but it would have been useless, because the fuse block on a 2018 Highlander requires a 30 amp mini fuse. Things to note about the installation of the hitch. 1) The instructions say to torque the 12MM bolts to 86 ft lbs. These are actually M12 19MM bolts. 2) There are two different 2018 Highlander videos. One has you removing the P/S plastic trim piece near the muffler. Totally unnecessary, and the other video shows the technician removing only the D/S. For the D/S, we only needed to cut the rear part near the bumper, and not the front. 3) The instructions are not clear on what to do with the towing bracket, but it was pretty obvious that we didn't need it anymore, still it left a little bit of confusion. Otherwise great product, fast shipping, and pretty easy to install. 664599

The harness works as stated however I did not like the idea of having to pull the 4 way plug out every time I wanted to use it. Fortunately it is long enough to run it out through a hole in the floorboard under the storage tray on the drivers side that has a rubber plug you can slice and slide around the wire harness and run it out close to the hitch receiver and mount with after market brackets available from etrailer 334804

Installation could not have been easier. The video on the e-trailer website for installation in the Highlander was a great help. Even though the vehicle came with the factory tow-prep package that includes a wiring harness, the T-One harness or equivalent is still required. Go figure. As an earlier reviewer noted, with the third-row seat it is necessary to remove the driver-side flip-up third-row cover (the piece just ahead of the tool kit cover). Easy enough to do by simply laying down the rear seat and prying up the rear edge of the cover to loosen the clips. See the attached photos, the first with the cover in place, and the second with it removed. It is necessary to remove this cover to permit removal of the left-side tray to gain access to the existing harness and plug. One other piece of advice is to thoroughly clean the surface to which the box will be mounted to assure a strong bond with the included two-sided tape. I used alcohol-soaked gauze. The price through e-trailer was the best I could find anywhere, and the service was second-to-none! 19328

I called customer service before ordering the product and talked to Nicky K. I was unable to view the instructions for the 2014-2015 highlander I was buying the product for. Nicky sent me a copy of the instructions and I ordered the product. Delivery time was 4 days with standard shipping and the product arrived exactly as described. Installation time was about 20-30 minutes, and most of that was just removing and re-installing the trim panels. Plug in 2 connectors, secure wires with included zip ties, install fuse, test and done. I got a follow up email from Nicky K making sure I was happy with the product. I give this company 5 stars, For the product, and especially the customer support. Would buy form etrailer again. 164381

This wire harness was exactly as expected. Installation was soooo easy. I didn’t even look at the instructions, just followed along with the video that told me what each part was, how to get to the wiring (very specific directions), how to connect, how to reassemble car, and how to test. Works perfect! 506251

Lasted for one 900 mile trip there and back. On the second trip 8 months later, got about 300 miles from my destination when it started getting dark. Turned my lights on and nothing. After a 3 hour delay trying to troubleshoot the malfunction in a Walmart parking lot, gave up and drove the remaining 300 miles with two LED flashlights set to blink mode zip strapped to the trailer. Replaced the module with the same item and so far as I know it is still working. 727630

I read all the reviews before I ordered my trailer hitch. The most common complaint people had was the condition it arrived in. When my hitch arrived, it was pretty much the same. Damaged box, scratches, etc. Etrailer needs to get a new shipper. That being said, it fit exactly the way it was supposed to. The videos and instructions were very helpful. I think it's a great product for the price. When I called and told them there was a big hole in the box and there might be missing parts, they said they would send anything I needed. All the parts were there, it works great, and I would use them again. 726948

The harness was great. It installed very easily and works great. I would make one suggestion, however. Don't let it hang out of the back of the tailgate when using. There is a drain plug on the left (driver) side of vehicle in the back. I made an "X" cut in the drain plug and fed the cable through it. Then replaced the plug in the body of the vehicle. I held it in place with some plastic ties and tucked the trailer end of the cable up under the bump when not in use. When I need to use I pull it down and connect to the trailer connector. 724778

2016 Toyota Highlander

I recently installed a #76156 Draw-Tite Hitch on a 2016 Toyota Highlander. I used a multi-tool with a standard cutting blade to trim the splash guard and exhaust deflector. The vehicle had been Zei(xxxx) rustproofed, but, as I expected, uncoated areas were discovered when the splash guard and spare tire were removed. I treated the areas with a quality spray can undercoating before and after the hitch installation. I checked tyhe condition and pressure of the spare, and sanded some rust and sprayed a little black paint on the rim. I re-used the longer bolts for the tow hook to anchor the passenger side of the hitch, but did not cut the fascia. I sprayed all six holes and the bolts with lithium grease before installing the hitch. Here are the photos of the result. Hope this helps. 718097

2018 Toyota Highlander

Easy hookup for 2018 Highlander. Only negative was that the wires to the trailer connector were too short to run as suggested in the installation video. I solved by cutting out slots in some of the plastic trim and tool kit tray. Not ideal but a decent work around. 717853

Overall very pleased with the quality of the hitch, install was fast and simple, however online it said nothing about having to cut and trim the lower plastic pieces not a big issue. In the instructions it showed where to trim. 715392

I purchased a invisible trailer hitch from this company after another company sent me a 2001 hitch for 2019 toyota. Everything i received from was totally wrong from the wiring, hitch, to the bolts. I talked to gwen at this company who assured me that all of the parts for this hitch will be perfect and custom made for my car. Everything i received went on like a glove and took a little over 45 minutes My recommendation for this company is totally excellent service and very high quality materials. great job guys and girls tomorrow i will be fishing. 707698

2008 Toyota Highlander

This kit is great. Fit my 2008 Highlander Hybrid perfectly. Only draw back, the fuse plugs are the wrong size. The 2008 Highlanders use the mini plugs, this was sent with regular size. Other than having to get a new fuse, great kit. Install is super easy and just as the 8 step install says it should be. 704417

2012 Toyota Highlander

Ordered this --item # 118449---from Tim M. at etrailer and I couldn't be happier. It fit exactly and very very easy to install on my 2012 Highlander without the factory tow package. The white plug with the black box just plugs into the the existing white plug under your dash. White plug connects to white plug. The other wiring also plugs into a white existing plug in the left back corner of your Highlander under the black plastic housing/compartment. Your 2012 has an existing one inch round hole drilled in the vehicle body bottom plugged with a rubber pop out seal. Pop out this round rubber seal and cut a slit in it and feed this harness down under the vehicle and plastic tie it to your hitch to plug into your trailer plug. The hardest part of this wiring installation is getting that large black hard plastic compartment out of the back corner of your Highlander so you have access to that back white electric plug. But just take your time and put a little pressure on it and it will pop right out and back in. 698961

  • Concealed Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2018 Toyota Highlander
  • Your 2018 Toyota Highlander the Draw Tite hitch part # 76156 that you referenced is a confirmed fit and would be exactly what you'd want since you said you only wanted the hitch tube to be visible. I attached an install video for this for you to check out as well. For trailer wiring you'd then want the # 118449 which is also a confirmed fit and our most reliable option. Install video attached below for this as well. If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer...

  • Can Brake Controller Install in 2018 Toyota Highlander
  • The newest Toyota Highlander we've installed a brake controller in is a 2014 model. I attached the install video to this page to show you the processs. The 2014 and 2018 Highlanders are the same generation though so what you see in the install video would be the same as on your vehicle. Tekonsha (the maker of our nicer brake controllers) has informed us that they have successfully installed brake controllers in your vehicle so I would not anticipate a problem. That said, Toyota is the...

  • Best 2-Inch Hitch for 2018 Toyota Highlander
  • There are both Class III and Class IV hitches made for your 2018 Highlander but all are the 2-inch receiver size. The one I recommend for its combination of high capacity, easier installation and value is the etrailer hitch # e98844 which offers 900-lb tongue weight and 6K towing ratings. This simply plugs into the factory tow package wiring harness located behind the driver side trim panel in the rear cargo area. This custom Class III hitch will use existing holes in your Highlander's frame for a completely no-drill installation. • Trailer Hitch for 2019 Toyota Highlander LE Plus With Full Size Spare Tire on Aluminum Rim
  • While we do offer outstanding trailer hitches for your 2019 Toyota Highlander LE Plus, the etrailer.com Trailer Hitch # E98844 will not work because the width of the aluminum rim on your full-size spare is simply too wide to allow this hitch to fit. It is likely that none of the reviews mention this because those that have that rim, which I believe is standard on the LE Plus, have gone a different direction in their choice of trailer hitch, which would be the options from Draw-Tite.
