Question:
Hi, I have a 2023 Toyota Highlander Platinum. I want a 7 pin connector. I want to charge the battery and control the brakes on my camper. Looks like TK57VR 7 way harness is good for me. Is a diode needed to stop the camper battery from back feeding to the tow vehicle.

Yes, the Tekonsha OEM Replacement Vehicle Wiring Harness w Brake Controller Adapter # TK57VR is what you want to get a fully functioning 7-Way on your 2023 Toyota Highlander. I also recommend picking up the mounting brackets # PK12711U and # C57202 to secure the 7-Way at the back of your vehicle.
This gives you the ability to use the brakes on your camper and it provides 12V power for a trickle charge on the battery - so the battery won't necessarily charge without a charging device like part # 331-BCDC1225D, but the 12V power helps to keep the battery from being depleted. A diode isn't needed as the wiring is built to prevent backfeed.
If you don't already have a brake controller I recommend one of the following:
- Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED24FR
- Wiring and Bracket Parts # RED69FR, # 331-TPH-017, and # 331-TPSI-002
OR
- Curt Echo In-Line Wireless # C79DR
The Tow-Pro Liberty is an in-cab controller that is able to mount into one of the panels on your Highlander and it uses color codes to let you know what's going on with the controls, while the Echo is a wireless controller that plugs in-line with the 7-Way connector at the back of your Highlander and then you use an app on your phone to adjust the different settings.
I'm attaching some review videos on the controllers for you to check out. The best one for you just depends on if you'd rather have the control knob in the cab or if you want something that you can adjust with your phone.
