Question:
Thank you very much for the info. Since I will be using the hidden crossmember style hitch, what mounting bracket would you suggest for the 7 pin harness?

Expert Reply:
For the 4-pin harness for your 2017 Subaru Outback, I recommend using the Curt T Connector # C56040. The converter box in the Curt models is better quality than the Hopkins wiring options. There is no splicing required to install the T Connector onto your vehicle.
Once the 4-pin is installed, you are ready to install the 7-pin harness. For that part, you need the Universal Installation Kit # ETBC7. This kit does require splicing into your current wiring.
If you plan to use a brake controller on your Outback, I recommend either the recommend the Tekonsha Voyager # 39510 or the Curt Echo # C51180. Both of these controllers are proportional controllers which means that the controller activates the trailer brakes in proportion to your vehicle's braking action. The Voyager is more of a traditional-style controller that requires mounting onto the dashboard of your vehicle near the steering wheel. If you decide on the Voyater, you need the additional plug-in harness # 20127 to complete the installation. On the other hand, the Curt Echo allows you to control the settings of your controller with the ease of your Smart device.
I went ahead and attached helpful installation videos for you attached to this answer.
