Question:

I understand that using this adaptor reduces the capacity of my hitch by 50, that will bring my hitch capacity to roughly 337 pounds so that will be the limiting factor since its less than the 400 pound rating on the adaptor. My confusion is on the tow vehicle. My 2021 Outback Onyx XT is rated for 350 pounds tongue weight, does this rating also get reduced by 50 when using an adaptor or would the vehicle rating remain at 350 pounds?

The EcoHitch # EH34FR doesn't provide an integral bracket for installing a 7-way trailer connector. We offer bracket mounts that usually work pretty well, which will use a pipe clamp to attach to the hitch crossbar, but because the crossbar will be buried behind the bumper cover once the installation is complete, that wouldn't be a good option in this case.

The Curt # C58000 Easy Mount bracket would be your best bet.

In the scenario you describe, you'd need to abide by the capacity of the lowest rated component, which in this case would be half the capacity of the # DT73RR Class III hitch. Half the tongue weight capacity would be 337-1/2 lbs, which is less than the vehicle's 350 lb tongue weight capacity. Since using the adapter moves the load further away from the hitch and would apply additional load to the portion of the vehicle frame member where the hitch attaches, you'll want to go with the lower 337 lb figure.
