Troubleshooting Kwikee Steps That Continue to Run After They are Fully Extended or Retracted

Updated 05/12/2022 | Published 05/04/2022

Question:

I have Kwikee steps mdl # 168367 and started having trouble with the steps grinding at the full extend and full retracted position. I ordered the plastic gear inside the gear box and replaced it. It worked for a couple of days of use but again stripped the teeth off of the plastic gear. My question is what stop the motor from turning when the steps are at full stow or full extend? Am I having a controller issue that is not stopping the motor when it is supposed to?

From the issues that you described you are either having a gear issue or a control unit issue. Since you have replaced gears already and had the same result, I would lean towards a control unit issue. The control unit is supposed to sense the larger current draw and shut off the power to the motor, if that is not happening then you may need a new control unit. I have listed the correct replacement control unit below, as well as the replacement gear box.

- Replacement Control Unit for Kwikee Electric RV Steps # LC379146

- Replacement Gear Box and A Linkage for Kwikee Electric RV Steps # LC379160
