Question:

My steps raise and lower but at the end they chatter for about 5 seconds, like grinding gears. In fact when closing they dont quite go all the way in, maybe an inch from fully retracted. They open all the way but again the chattering at the end for 5 or so seconds. Motor and gear box?? Attached a picture which might help.

It does sound like a motor and gear box issue, and so long as your steps are from 2006 or newer (there should be a sticker verifying the year on the motor) then we have exactly what you need with a new motor and and gear box/linkage for your 1101422 / 214-1001 motor:
