Question:

I just purchased a Thule easyfold bike rack. How can I install tail lights like the ones they have on the European easy folds? When I have the two bikes on the rack my tail lights are obstructed. It’s a violation of our laws in this country in every state. I don’t understand why they make them that way in Europe and that here. What can I do?

I do have a solution for you, but Thule doesn't offer a light kit specifically designed for your EasyFold XT bike rack, # TH903202.

One option is to use the LED Light Kit # 98174LED along with two mounting brackets # BK70BB . This would most likely require permanent modifications to your EasyFold though, since you'd need to drill holes to mount the lights on the rack itself. You could try to use zip ties to attach the mounting brackets to your bike rack, but it wouldn't be the most secure.

A less invasive and effective option is to simply use a magnetic light kit, like # TLL21RK. The magnetic base on the tail lights allows you to easily attach them on any metal surface on the vehicle. If you really wanted to attach the lights to the bike rack itself, you'd need to use magnetic bases, like # 3378895404, since the aluminum and ABS plastic construction of the EasyFold isn't magnetic. I've attached a couple of photos as examples.

Automotive regulations in Europe tend to be much more strict than they are here in the US, which I imagine plays a big part in the design differences between the US and European versions of the EasyFold. Also, keep in mind that the position of the hitch receiver as well as the location of the tail lights can vary greatly from vehicle to vehicle, so this wouldn't necessarily be an issue for for every EasyFold owner.
