I took a look at the owner's manual for the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo V6 3.6L. The 3.6L engine Grand Cherokee can tow a 5,000 lb trailer. That figure is the gross weight so that would include all of the cargo inside the trailer. You want to keep in mind the gross combined weight rating of the vehicle is 10,400 lbs for the 3.6L so you do not want to exceed that number. That includes the combined weight of the vehicle, its occupants, the tongue weight of the trailer and the cargo inside the vehicle.
You also want to keep in mind the tongue weight rating of the hitch you are using and not exceed that. For example: the Draw-Tite hitch part # 75699 for the Laredo has a 500 lb tongue weight rating.
