Hub Bolt Pattern and Bearing Compatibility with 5K Trailer Axles

Question:

I have a 3500 axle and want to upgrade to a 5k axle. Can I use the hubs on my 3500 on a 5k axle? Reason being is I just need a stronger axle for safety purposes but I don’t want to upgrade to different wheels and tires.

Your existing 3500-lb hubs could be used on a 5K axle if the spindles on both axles used the same inner and outer bearings. But usually these two different axle capacities mean different bearings with very different dimensions. That means 3500-lb hubs will not fit. Also 5K hubs use the 6-on-5-1/2 wheel bolt pattern.

The most common bearings for a 3500-lb axle are # L68149 (inner) and # L44649 (outer) while a 5200-lb axle typically uses bearings # 25580 (inner) and # LM67048 (outer). If you refer to the linked article on bearings you can see these and other parts listed according to axle weight capacity. Bearing # L68149 has an inner diameter of 1.378-inches while bearing # 25580 has an inner diameter of 1.750-inches so they are not interchangeable on the spindle.

You could replace the beam axle with a new one like 5200-lb axle # 8327816 and then add idler type hubs # 8-213-5UC1-EZ. But these hubs use a different bolt pattern, 6-on-5-1/2.

Or you could use an axle-less suspension kit from Timbren, such as the 5200-lb kit # ASR5200S01 which bolts right on to the trailer frame and completely eliminates the leaf spring set-up, improving your ground clearance at the same time.
