Question:
I found your site very helpful and will be placing an order, but i need some help. I have a very small camper ist one that weighs just over 400#. Im trying to upgrade from 4.8x8 to the other authorized size 5.40x12. i only find 5.30x12 available. Will it work? is the 5.xx a ratio or a measurement? 2nd, I think I can use a load range B because of the weight, but is there an advantage to going up to LR C? Thank you for allowing these very basic questions while I get up to speed.

The 4.80 x 8 tire size that you have now is 16.1 inches tall and the overall width is 4.6 inches. If you go to the 5.30 x 12 tire size, the overall diameter is 21.9 inches tall and 5.6 inches wide. The first number (4.80 or 5.30) on the tire size designates the width range of your tire in inches.
You will want to make sure you will have enough clearance on your camper for the 5.8 inch taller and 1 inch wider tire. I do not list a 5.40 x 12 tire size available.
The 4.80 x 8 tire size is listed in a load range B, part # AM10002, which has a maximum load of 590 lbs at 60 psi and the load range C, part # AM10004, which has a maximum load of 760 lbs at 90 psi.
The 5.30 x 12 tire size is available in load range B, part # AM10064, with a maximum load of 840 lbs at 55 psi, the load range C, part # AM10066, with a maximum load of 1,045 lbs at 80 psi, and the load range D, part # AM10068, with a maximum load of 1,250 lbs at 105 psi.
For your small 400 pound camper the load range B would have enough load carrying capacity.
You will need to remember that just my installing a larger tire with a higher load carrying capacity will not always increase the load you will be able to carry. The tire is just one part in your suspension system on the camper. Your load capacity will always be determined by the lowest rated part in the complete suspension system of your camper.
I am including a couple of links to FAQ pages on trailer tire sizing and trailer tire information.
