Brake Controller Recommendation and Installation Procedure on 2010 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

The Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885 is the brake controller I recommend most often. The controller is simple to set up and use, and is very highly regarded by our customers.

Brake Controllers aren't vehicle or trailer specific, so it'll work perfectly with the vehicle and camper you described. To install the controller, you'll need the controller itself, a functional 4 -pole trailer connector on the Wrangler and our Brake Controller Installation Kit, part # ETBC7.

If you don't have a 4-pole trailer connector in place on your Wrangler Unlimited, you can install one using part # 118416. With the functional 4 pole in place, you'd install the 7-way trailer connector adapter included in the install kit. The adapter plugs right into the 4 pole, leaving 4 additional wires that need to be dealt with. The black and blue wires carry 12-volt power to the trailer for accessories that might need it and the power to the brakes from the brake controller respectively. The black and blue wires are extended using the duplex cable included with the kit. The cable carries the brake controller signal and the 12-volt power feed, and is ran under the vehicle to the engine compartment, where the 12 volt feed connects to the positive battery terminal via a 40 amp breaker included with the kit. The wire that carries the brake controller output runs through the firewall where it'll connect to the blue wire exiting the brake controller. The white wire from the adapter grounds to the vehicle's frame and the purple wire is tapped into the Jeep's reverse lamp circuit if the trailer has reverse lamps. If not, the wire can just be bundled up.

The brake controller is installed under the dash to the right of the steering column, within easy reach of the driver. The controller should be level on a side to side axis and pointed in the direction of travel. 4 wires exit the rear of the controller. The blue wire connects to the brake output wire ran from the rear of the vehicle. The black and wire both run through the firewall to the battery. The black wire runs through a 30 amp breaker included in the kit to the positive battery terminal. The white wire grounds to the negative battery terminal. The red wire exiting the rear of the controller taps into the brake stoplamp switch located at the top of the brake pedal. There may be many wires exiting the switch, you'll need to use the provided circuit tester to probe all the wires until you find the wire that only shows power when the brake pedal is pressed. Tap the red wire into that circuit.
