How Old is Too Old for New Trailer Tires Based on Tire Date Code

Question:

I am purchasing new tires for my 2011 Chalet Alpine A Frame Trailer. They wanted to put some on that had a date code of 2014 on them. They were new tires. Should I be concerned and ask for tires with a more recent date code? Will a tire with a newer date code last longer? thank you!

According to our resident tire and wheel expert, who has 30 years experience in the tire and wheel industry, it is best to purchase tires no more than 2 years old. Typically you will want your tires with a date no more than 1-1/2 years to 2 years past. Depending on when these tires were manufactured in 2014, they could still fall within that time line (May 2016).

Newer tires will have had less time to break down or be exposed to the elements. It never hurts to try and get newer tires, rather than ones getting close to 2 years old.
