Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

  • Can I Put Larger Tires On My Small Boat Trailer?
Hello Marco, thanks for reaching out. It may be possible to put larger tires on your boat trailer. The main thing to consider here is the wheel well clearance. You want at least 3" between the tire and the fender, and at least 1" between the inside of the tire and the frame of the trailer. The 4.80/4.00-8 tires are about 4.7" wide and 16/1" in diameter. So if you can tell me how much clearance you are working with currently, we can use that to determine if larger tires will fit, and what...

  • Are 15 Tires Available with a 4 Lug Wheels
While we do have 15" tires and wheels that have a 4 lug pattern none of them are compatible with each other. If you were to go with a 15" tire, like the Taskmaster Provider # TR20515D then the least amount of lugs is a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern like the wheel that you could pair it with # AM20422. For a 4 on 4" bolt pattern the largest tire we have comes with the combo # AM3S120 which uses the Loadstar 175/80D13 bias trailer tire. If by chance you are talking about the total diameter...

  • Can 4.80/4.00-8 Tires Be Upgraded To Larger Size For Higher Speed Rating
Hello again Mark; as long as you don't exceed the 65 mph rating you can stick with a tire like the Kenda Loadstar K371 Bias Trailer Tire # AM10002. Moving to a larger tire with a higher speed rating is going to mean a fairly large size difference. To see if you can use one of these tires you will need to measure for clearance. The closest thing that also uses an 8" wheel would be the Kenda 215/60-8 # AM3H290. This has a speed rating of M for 81 mph. However, it is significantly wider...

  • Benefits of Using Higher Load Range Trailer Tires
Increasing a trailer's tire size can offer some potential advantages but it can also cause issues. Using a wider and/or larger diameter tire can mean clearance issues within the fender wells and at the leaf springs. It is important to have enough clearance above the tire tread to allow for suspension travel; at least 3-inches but more is better. The most common reason folks want to use larger tires is to reduce the chances of a blowout, which is certainly a very good motivation! But there...

  • What Pressure Should Trailer Tires Actually be Ran At
Trailer tire pressure ratings are different from vehicle tires. With trailer tires you want to always inflate them to the max psi rating when cold and as long as you aren't exceeding the weight capacity and speed rating any psi fluctuation will be totally fine and not need to be monitored. If you under-inflate them (sounds like you might have been) they will build heat up quickly which eventually leads to failures like blow outs. The # AM30000 should be ran at it's 60 psi rating. It...

  • Switching From Integrated Hub/Wheel on Log Splitter Trailer to Separate Hub and Wheel
It sounds like you have an integrated hub/wheel design on your trailer and want to switch to a more standard separate hub and wheel. If that's the case then we have some great options for you, the Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 2,000-lb Axles part # AKIHUB-440-2-1K is an idler hub assembly with 4 on 4" bolt pattern that uses L44643 (1") bearings. If you're looking for new wheels/tires as well, I recommend the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel part # AM30040. This should...

Since prices fluctuate from time to time, the Kenda # AM30040 Load C, which is currently priced a little less than the Kenda # AM30000 Load B, is definitely the tire and wheel combination I would go with since it has a higher weight capacity. The only real differences that you will see is that the Load C tire will be able to stay a little cooler and handle higher weights with less stress. A few things you will want to keep in mind when operating; even though part # AM30040 has a higher...

  • What is the Highest Rated 4.80-8 Trailer Tire or Tire and Wheel Combo Available
For a 4.8-8 trailer tire with the most weight carrying capacity, we have # AM10004. This is a tire by itself and it is rated for 760 pounds at 90 psi. It fits 8 x 3-3/4 inch wheels. The highest rated tire and wheel combo in this size with a 4 on 4 bolt pattern is # AM30040, also at 760 pounds at 90 psi. The highest rated tire and wheel combo with a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern is # AM30060 at 760 at 90 psi also. I have included a link to our tire and wheel FAQ articles for you.

  • Can a Load Range C Tire be Used Instead of a Load Range B Tire on a Trailer
First, make sure that you stay within the gross trailer weight capacity for your trailer. If that 200 pounds extra puts you over the gross trailer weight capacity then you will want to carry that extra weight in the vehicle. Going with a higher capacity tire will not increase the gross trailer weight capacity. With that said since you have a long way to go and such small tires, having a stronger tire in the same size would help to reduce the chance of anything happening to the tires. For...

  • Is The Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8 Inch White Wheel, # AM30040, Rated For The Highway
The Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8 Inch White Wheel, # AM30040, is highway rated. Trailer tires have a speed rating of 65 mph. Trailer tires are designed for carrying a maximum load at all times, so to do that they are reinforced in the sidewall. With the sidewall being reinforced, that causes the heat to build up more quickly at lower speeds with a load on the tires, so you will not want to run a trailer tire at higher speeds than the 65 mph speed limit.

  • Recommended Load Range C Boat Trailer Tires in Size 4.80-8
Increased load and higher driving speeds both tend to cause tires to run hotter, and it is possible that this combination of factors has led to your two recent blowouts. A higher load range tire can deal with the increase in your trailer weight. However, most trailer tires are rated for only 65-mph unless specifically stated otherwise. None of our tires in your size carry a higher speed rating. In your tire size we offer a tire only, Kenda Bias Ply Load Range C tire # AM10004, and also...

It is feasible this can be done as long as you have the room. The Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Aluminum Wheel part # AM30677 that you looked at is 20.7" in diameter compared to a Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel part # AM30040 that is 16.1" in diameter the tire will be 4.6" larger. Only half of that will be between the fender and tire so 2.3" or about 2-3/8" plus a couple of inches for suspension travel. With that said I think 4.4" would be a good number...

  • Comparing 4.80/4.00-8 Trailer Tires and Speed Rating of 4.80/4.00-8 Trailer Tires
Tire and wheel combo # AM30040 is the same tire as # AM10004. They are both made by the same company and both have the same rating and load range. The trailer tires that we carry are rated for 65 miles per hour. You do not want to exceed the speed rating because it will build up excess heat. Trailer tires already have a thicker sidewall than passenger vehicle tires and this adds to the heat they generate. So you do not want to increase the heat by going over 65 miles per hour. I have...

I didn't see you mention this step, but when installing the new hubs/bearings did you tighten the castle nut nice and tight to seat the bearings fully, and then loosen it up to get the correct bearing preload? If not I would start there and complete this step and see. The hubs should not free spin, but should have very minor resistance. It is not recommended to use a vehicle tire on a trailer or camper because they have weaker sidewalls and can fail. The tire and wheel capacity for the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8 inch White Wheel # AM30040 that you referenced is rated for the individual tire and wheel, not per axle (2 wheels and tires). You should note that the wheel capacity is 910 lbs and the tire capacity 745 lbs at 90 psi. This means a couple things. First, your towing setup is always limited to the lowest rated component in the setup, so in this situation the tire is rated lower than the wheel so the overall capacity...

Thank you for the photo of your camper trailer. The height difference between an 8 inch wheel with tire and a 15 inch wheel with tire will really depend on the tire size on the wheel. It is true that an 8 inch wheel is 3-1/2 inches smaller in diameter than a 15 inch wheel, but with tires on the wheels the difference will likely be greater than 3-1/2 inches.
